O,, May 18.—As tough a

crowd as ever struck a town infested Erie, Pa., yesterday and during the fore part of to-day. They came from almost everywhere to attend the proposed fight lw tween Goss and Ryan. The former stopped at the Reid House, and was barked by Barney Aaron, Wm. Bersby, J. H. Monahau and William Tracy. The latter held forth at the Morton House, and was surrounded by Steve Tnylor, Johnnie Baker. Johnnie Roach,- Lyons and Fitr.patrick. At half-past 12 o'clock this morning Arthur Chambers, the light weight champion of America, arrived with a tough gang. Soon after this the parties proceeded to the docks, where the two principals with nine men each wen? assigned quarters on a vessel. At 2:80 a. m. the boat moved out. It looked like busincM but when just out of the harbor the steamer Welch hailed the steamer Thompson, and asked if Goss was aboard, itating that lie and Barney Aaron bad just left the Welch, saying they would go out on the Thompson, because of the complexion of the Ryan crowd on the Welch. Search was made for Goss, but he was not found. The Thompson Immediately pulled up to the docks, amid the shrieks and curses of the party on board. Goss Was found at his hotel, declaring he could not get a fair show, because of Rvan's numerous friends, and would not flgbt under such circumstance#. The crowd waited till 5 a.m.. when they beard posi tirely that Goas had duffed, and flatly refused to fight.

There frrno telling where the fight was to liavo taken place, but the general l»e* lief is that the whole affair was a pat-up Job. Barney Aaron, bowevtpr. declared ft a bloodr scheme to kill Go**. Most of the crowd left for the East during the day. It is said that the Canadian Sheriff hovered arotmd Port Dover. bof«ng to gobble up both and Ryan. *homd they appear.

friends of General Grant are conducting his campaign in a masterly manner. Fully aware that they have ample power to crush all opposition, they are using all means to conciliate their opponents, and make their defeat as little bitter to them as possible, so that after the Convention there may be* the smallest possible number of wounds of hatred or rancor to heal. The hand of steel is clasped with a velvet glove but .should it be necessary tf4 strike, the blow will be none the less decisive because of the, delicacy of the material with which the knuckles are covered.

General Grant has an absolute majority of the instructed delegates here, and they will remain steadfast to him tp the bitter end. They also claim a majority of the uninstructed delegates outside of Cook County, which gives them a majority of the Convention, even if the Farwell Hall delegates are admitted. They are notdisposed to be. hogsrish, however, or to give any unreasonable excuse for a bolt so the Committee on Credentials will report in favor of admitting about half and half of the conflicting delegations from Cook County, but on the basis of representation from each Senatorial District, whidh is the principle for which the Grant men in that county are contending. Then the Convention will elect forty-two delegates to represent the State in the Chi cago National Convention, and no one who is not known to be a pronounced and incorruptible Grant man will be elected a delegate.

The cave-in has rendered a portion of the Reading Railroad tracks unsafe for a time, and passengers had to be transferred this evening, but al this hour, half past eleven, the traffic has been resumed and every thing is in working order.

The greatest excitement prevailed during the rescuing of the ill fated miners. Large crowds congregating around the pit, and all expecting to see his or her brother brought out dead. WASHINGTON. May 18 —Between the excitement of the approaching boat race and the tunning horse races. Congress accomplished but little to-day. Senator Beck, by betting on a horse that was not a favorite by any means, raked in a good ly lot of "Scads." Senator William*, of Kentucky, says that he is in favor of an adjournment that Congress lias been in session six months, and that so far us the Senate is concerned it did nothing at lirst but talk about the Geneva award, and it is now talking itself to death on the Kellogg case and r« ijurftciiitt. He says he is sick of it. and wants to go home. The free-traders of the House have given up all hope of passing the Omnibus Tariff Bill. While of this opin ion, however, they are anxious to press vote and make a record. As far as the Funding Bill is concerned, Fernando Wood, who has it in charge, has given upall hojies of having it acted upon this session. There is no immediate prospect that any of the other contested election^ will be disposed of tins .se.t'on. If the disposition of the Ho isc lo ra-li business augurs an early adjournment, il will be brought about, for the members are work ing with a will to the end that they can get out of Washington before the holding of the Chicago Convention.
