Just before going to press we hear that the Councilman who is reported to have taken the bribe of $300 to vote for a certain gentleman for City Attorney Is "Mr. Harrison, Democratic Councilman from the Sijith ward, and that the name of the gentleman for whom he was to vote was "Mr. Richard Dunnlgan. We interviewed
Mr. Dunnlgan with reference to the matter. Reporter—Mr. Dunnigan. I have heard your name connected with the great "bribe case" mentioned in this morning's tixpr«»*. I wish to inquire if you ever tried to bribe anyone to vote for you in the Council for the office of City Attorney?
Mr. Dunnigan—No, I never did. 1 have never been a candidate before this Couueil for the office ofCity Attorney. I knew that the present City attorney was elected for two years and that the council was Democratic, consequently there would be no change.
Reporter: when did vou first hear of the connection of your name in the matter
Mr Dunnigan: 1 rtrst heart! of it yesterday afternoon, a Mr. O'Sullivan told me thai he bad made me city attorney, I inquired how that could lie the case as I was not a candidate and it^was Impossible, be remarked that it was not, and that he bad the whole thing arranged. I inquired bow that could IK\ and he said that he had seen Mr. Harrison, and that he had fixed him with money. I then remarked with a great deal of font4 that I would not allow my name to be used in any such affair, and flint he must stop the matter .it
This is all I know about
the matter and if any one con meets m# or i« any way intimates thai I am implicated in such an outrageous affair, he is

ATTEMPTED BRIBE,
®r a Democratic Bribe In Fartuui-
A certain Councilman informs us that he was approached,Thursday and again yesterday and offered a bribe tf $300 to vote for a certain gentleman for City Attorney. The briber gave his promissory note for the above amount which saiil Councilman holds for future um.—£jr pre**.
What does the above mean can it IK* possible that a citizen of Terre Haute, even though he IK- a Democrat, can have become so depraved as to have openly attempted and sut rctd^d in bribing a I)em ocratic Councilman to vote for a certain man for City Attorney?

An unusually large numler attended tlie meeting of the society last night, The choir opened the exercises by a song. "Brother, Sow Thy Seed. After prayer the rhoir again sang a very appropriate piece.
Miss Overman next rend a description of Wyandott's Cave. Her product ion wax well rendered, and showed carr of preparation. "Drifting with the Tide" was then sang by Mr. Rose I terry.
Mr. Deland followed with a declamalion which he gave in a very pleasing manner. Mr. II. Martin then read a seleclion fhun (.'humor, reproducing one of the stories in the Canterbury tales into prose. The society was then favored with a very nice instrumental duet by Misses Hedges and Adams.
A debate was the next exercise in order subject, "Was the invention of the cotton gin a blessing or a curse. Affirmative. Messrs. Wilson and Chambers negative, Messrs. Webster and Alexander. The judges decided in favor of the negative. A male quartett closed the exercises of the evening.
The society was greatly disturbed by the unlady-like actions of some girls who visited the society. These societies are for cultivation, and not a place where girls and boys may go to simply enjoy themselves.

—The model board of health would do well to look after affairs in the alley between Main and Cherry and Fourth and Fifth.
A NEWS man started through that alley yesterday and after getting about half way was compelled to beat a retreat. The Hies and other wild beasts that congregate there mustered their forces and stood him battle. After getting a good strong clothes pin on his nose and a club in his hand he sallied forth again on his voyage of discovery. Arehelogically speaking the surface indicates that the mound builders have recently left there, (treat ash and shell heaps with bones jyul chipped flints are in abundance.
We didn't make any excavations on ac count of the Zoological grandeur of this new country, the fierceness of the ani mals preventing it. There was a tiger in easy range but seemed quiet.
But such a congregation of dead cats and rats, and such a living combination of green flies and maggots can't be found this side of Gehenna.
Parties desiring to explore this alley can gain further particulars at the NEWS office
—At a recent missionary meeting in San Francisco Rev. Dr. Piatt, of the Protestant Episcopal Church, made a savage attack on the public school*, which he denounced as godless institutions, where the boldest Infidelity was taught. He utfed Christian parents to withdraw their children and to send them, instead, to the parochial schools.

To "Liberal."
Editor NEWS:—I am indeed surprised at the seemingly ungodliness of "Liberal." It is indeed strange that in this christian country where the Bible is the foundation of government that a man can be an infidel or a "Liberal.*' Is it not strange that a man can lie found so blasphemous as to deride that sacred book which has been the guiding star of millions? Our Messed Savior on the cross could not have been derided by the Jews in a greater measure than is our sacred BiMe by a great many persons 1fh Terre Haute.
I am indeed glad to see that your col umns are open for the discussion of these questions pro and con and hope that some one may defend our blessed master, and Holy Bible from these vile attacks.
