BIG IMMIGRATION TO AMERICA-KILLED BY THE CARS.

DEATH AT GKE EN CASTLE—RUN AWAY AT COVINGTON.

CHILI! HORROR AT CHICAGO.

GRKF.NCASTLK, IXD,. May. 13.—Andrew Sigler, one of the early pioneers and first settlers of this (Putnam) county, died yesterday in the seventy-seventh year of his age.

LONDON, May 13.—The Steamship Company willthis week send out nearly four thousand emigrants to America. Several lines are obliged to put on extra steamers. The demand for accommodation at Queenstown greatly exceeds the supply. Companies which sold tickets in advance are compelled to return detention money to emigrants awaiting their turns. Twen-ty-two steamers have already sailed this week fwith passengers for the United States. Fotir more follow, besides several freighters.

At to-day's wool sale about ten thou sand bales were disposed of, chiefly Sydney. Victoria and New Zealand. The tone was quieter, and a good many lots were bought in, chiefly greasy, the demand for France having slackened.

CHICAGO, May 18.—Grant had quite a day of it in Illinois to-day, carrying four counties and getting fourteen votes in the State Convention. These counties were: Hardin, one vote Pulaski, three votes Franklin, two votes, and Stephenson, eight votea. There was a hot contest in the latter county, jhe Washburne men be ing very determined, but they were outnumbered.

Ninety-two out of the 101 counties have now held their conventions, and a careful review of the figures, giving Cook County her delegation as instructed, and as it stands (which luis been done in all other counties in making up this summary)'Grant will be found to'have 808 votes in the State Convention, Blaine 289, and Washburnc 103. If Grant gets all the remaining votes but one (which-of course he will not do), he will have a bare majority in the convention. If he fails in that, then the anti-Grant, combination will be in the majority.

As regards the bolters in Cook county, it has transpired that three of them have refused to go to Springfield under exist ing circumstances. Both delegations held meetings to-day, but so far as known nothing transpired, and no compromfse is now likely, as both are stubborn.

Ward has been looking for him all day.

Vi NCXNNKS, May 13.—Of I the many queer things that have occurred in this county, a marriage which occurred yesterday is the queerest. At the February term of the Knox Circuit Court, March 6th last, Mrs. Isabel Barnett, aged about eighteen, was divorced from Melville, Barnett, a young man who had barely passed his majority. She alleges in her complaint general worthlessness, and penchant for the society of women who were not so celebrated for virtue as was Cesar's wife. After a separation of two short months the two youthful couple have again COEBC to the conclusion that they were made only for each other, and so were remarried yesterday. An*t her (litcajro CklMsMemtr. CHICAGO. May 18.—The case of Henry Sass, charged with cruelty tt^tis child, has been thoroughly looked into by O. L. Dudley, agent of the Humane Society, and a terrible state of affairs developed. It seems that about a month ago Sass and his wife rented a basement at No. 334 Milwaukee avenue, and began the manu facture of cheese. The neighbors saw them lock the place every night, and supposed they were the only persons con nected with the place.but on one occasion ajlady thought she heard the cry of a child after the proprietor had gone.

A watch was then set to discover the secret of the sobbing, which several people were positive they heart! coming frofci the basement. Some body who visited Mr. Sass in his daily labors caught sight of the child Maud sitting on a stool and facing the wall in a most constrained po sition. At night Sass went away, but the little girl (she is but nine years, old) was left in the dark, damp cellar.

Mr. Dudley th*n took up the case, and enlisted a Mrs Jackson ih his service. The latter induced Mr. Sass one evening to allow her to stay at her house over night, and it was then that the most astounding facts were developed.

The little one's underclothing was satu rated with blood, and her body black and blue with the marks of a stick. Her eyes were blood shot with crying, and by her startled demeanor she gave evidence that her mind had been affected. She said she had been obliged to sleep on an old trunk at night being locked in the cellar by Sass and his wife.
