THE CITY.

—The E. & T. H. pay car visited this end of the road yesterday. —The I. & St. L. will shortly reduce the fare over their road to three cents per mile. —It is aa English opera house, not a French one, that is to be built in Indianapolis^ —A, runaway occurred yesterday on Fifteenth street. No serious damage was done. —A runaway was caused, yesterday, near the court house square, by a couple of boys flying kites. —The First Baptist Sabbath School will hold their annual picnic June 2d. Place not yet designated. —It is surprising to see what a large crowd can collect in a short time when a couple of dogs get to fighting. —A fight took place on south Eighth street last Monday between two women. A poor innocent gosling was the cause.

.John T. Moore will hereafter have complete charge of the business previously done under the management of Moore & Haggerty. —The nail works shut down last Saturday and work will be discontinued for six weeks, according to present understanding. —A convention of superintendents of gas companies in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, will meet at the NewDenison to-day. and continue in session three days, —A man claimiug to be from the region "where the Indian roams wild o'er the prairie," was entertaining a large collection of boys and men lust night on Main street near Fourth. —The partnership between Harrison, Jackson & Harrison has been dissolved, and the new carriage factory will hereafter be managed by Harrison Bros. —The police made a raid last night on Jennie Jackson's bagnio, and captured Malt. Coats. Bertha Davis, Minnie Glassner, John Price, Harry Williams and John Sage. —Centenary Ray, of Riley township, has announced himself a candidate for County Treasurer. Mr. Ray is a man well-known all over the county, and we think a very strong man in the Rcpuplican party. —The ErjreMH says one of theuushers at the Opera House last night "had his hair partted down as near the left ear as possible." His ears being the biggest part about him, we suppose the Express speaks truly. —If improvements continue to be made on Main street, between Sixth and Seventh, that square will be one of the finest in the city. A great change has taken place since the recent improvements have been made, and the trade in that locality is becoming much better. —It was a noticeable fact at the Opera House, last night, that Usher Dick Badgeley had his hair parted down as near his left ear als possible, while Charley Mixer, the other usher, did not have his hair prirted. for reasons best known to himself. —Express. —In the grand excursion to Cincinnati, the Vandalia only chargcs $8. from Terre Haute to Cincinnati for the round rrip, while the Indianapolis branch, charges *4- from Indianapolis to Cincinnati for round trip. This is a distinction of wealth. Hurrah forthe Vandalia. —Two children who were separated from their mother six years ago at Eyansvllle, were restored having been found in a Catholic school at this city. The father died before the separation, while the mother was sick and Was afterward declared Insane, but subsquently recovered. —The recent storms area phenomenon that would form an interesting topic for discussion for some scientific philosopher. Why is it that nearly every rain that visits the United States this season is accompanied with a sovere storm? Htieh ft thing lias ndver been knftwn to be the case before. -The Y. M. R. TERRE ILAUTE, I¥TD., WEDNESDAY, MAY 12, 1880.-3:30 P.M.

THE NEWS

NEWS.1

has received a letter through

the postoffice signed "Josie," which lays a very serious charge at the feet of a wellknown newspaper man whose "bump" for the "vicious" seems to be somewhat prominent. We refrain from publishing it for the present. It is just to say that the newspaper man does not belong to a weekly journal. —A fire, causing a loss of about

$400.

occurred at half-past two o'clock this morning on the corner of Second and Gookins streets.

A

house belonging to

H. P. Polk was discovered to be on fire, and an alarm was immediately turned in. Most all of the household goods were removed, but some of them, however, considerably damaged by water. The cause of the fire is unknown, there having been ne fire in the house except that in th» cook stove at supper-time. —Our worthy citizen and honorable gentleman, J. O. Jones, was in a theatre in Washington City, years ago. when the elder Bootli was playing there. Some careless person turned a camphene lamp over, and at once the flames ascended. The scene was horrible hundreds jumped out of the windows, aad the ground was strewed with mangled bodies. By the exertions of Mr. Jones, the flames were extinguished. Just such a scene may occur at Bissell's death-trap, and com bined with more disastrous results.

Nhootlng Affair.

One of the most cowardly attempts of murder was perpetrated yesterday evening, about five o'clock, in the drug store of Buntin & Armstrong, corner of Sixth and Main streets. The victim of the attempt was L. S. Harrison, a gentleman whose career among the social and business circles of this city has been of the highest and most creditable character. The person who made the attack, Dr. Wliittaker, of Middletown. is a person of low and degrades reputation, with hands already stained in the blood of his fellow man.

The circumstances are about as follows: Dr. W. called at the store early during the day, and left an order for some drugs. He returned in the evening, at the time above mentioned, under the influence of liquor, and drawing a pistol from his pocket, remarked that he was going to shoot the man who was sitting in his buggy in front of the store. Mr. Harrison, who was writing at the desk, on hearing the click caused by the adjusting of the hammer of the wea pon looked up in time to notice the muzzle directed at himself. He immediately threw up his right hand, and just at that moment the abominable scamp Whitaker fired, the ball taking effect in the hand of Mr. 11. The wounded gentleman stepped to a drawer where a revolver is kept, but before he could find it the cowardly would-be assassin had made his escape.

Mr. Harrison to-day filed an affidavit for the arrest of Whitaker for assault with intent to kill. We are glad to know that the result was not more serious and hope that the cowardly scamp who committed the deed will be handled as roughly as possible by the proper ^authorities. The act was wholly without excuse, and as Mr. W. has tried such things before let him suffer to the fullest extent of the law.

PERSONAL.

D. Smith, of the Chicago Express, is in the city, J. S. Davis, of Paris, visited the shooting match yesterday, at Strawberry Ilill.

Mrs. Lizzie Bap pen field hast gone to work for Espenhain & Albrecht. Mr. Albert Kussner in company with his two sisters left yesterday afternoon for a six months visit to Europe.

Notice.

The city authorities will take notice that the owners of the Opera House gave an exhibition there last night, and in doing so violated the most important law of the city. The poor devil who violates an ordinance is always punishable. Why not punish the owners of the Opera House when they violate a vastly more important law? Is there to be a distinction made between the rich and poor?

BUBGL.ARY AT PARIS, ILLINOIS.

Albania's Great Famine In Persia

BALTIMORE,

May il.—A terribld ex

plosion occured late this afternoon just outside the north wall of Fort Mc Henry, which resulted in the instant killing of six persons and the wounding of two others. David R. Shannon & Co.. junk dealers, purchased a quanity of condemned sharpnell shells at the Fort and took part of them outside to break up. Francis G. Shannon, a brother of David R,, Witlierman Bush, John Farblee atul Henry Hamlin were the men engaged in the work, and Robert Steinmau. a boy named John Burk, an unknown boy and a German man were present looking on. An anvil was used for breaking, and one of the men held the shells on it, while another struck them with a heavy sledgehammer. Before the shells were subjected to blows, water was poured upon them. One or two shells had been broken, when a policeman appeared, land warned them of their danger. Shortly after a shell was struck and exploded, when the boy John Burk, and Herman Bush, Johu Farblee. Robert Steinmau, the German who wa» present, and the other boy were iustantlv killed, and Francis Shannon and Henry Hamlin severely wounded. The bodies of the killed were badly mutilated, atul that of the unknown German, who stood near, was literally blown to atoms. Por tions of his body were found in every direction, and the largest part discovered wasan arm. An official investigation will take place.

The report of the explosion was heard a distance of five miles.

A Father*a Inhumanity.

TIIORNTOWN,

Ind., May 11..—Mrs. Har

riet Addington died yesterday under pr culiar and distressing circumstances. She was married, and was the mother of four children, the eldest being but ten years of age. Early in the spring she, with her family, went to live with her father, who resides near Lebanon, Indiana, and while thetfe was taken sick, her illness being brought on by exposure from being com pelled to work in a s\igar-camp without sufficient clothing or protection from the inclemency of the weather. Some two week* ago her husband was driven away through fear of his life, his father-in-law threateningto kill him if he ever returned. On Thursday of last week the inhuman father compelled his daughter to leave, she being at the time very low with lung fever, and in no fit condition to be moved. She was brought to }t.his place in a destitute condition, and died yesterday, her death, no doubt, being hurried by the ex posure consequent upon her removal here, her father refusing to let her have either clothing or lurniture. Her remains were interred by the authorities, and funds were raised to send the children to friends in the southern part of the State.
