He was helped to rise and mount his horse, and went on his way as though nothing had happened to retard his progress. —The brake in the Paris road caused by the raise in the river is being tilled up. and travel on this road will soon he resumed. This was one of the principal tributarityi of ingress to this city, and the hinderance caused by this brake litis had its effect on the produce market. —Mr John J. Landis, recently of the pool ofllce in Indianapolis, and son of Mr. M. M. Landis, of the Merchant Des patch Transportation Co.'s oflico of that city, lias arrived here to succeed Mf. T. M. Deveraux, who goes to Cincinnati as local agent of the M. D. T. Co. at this point. Mr. Landis is very popular in Indianapolis, and will be a welcome addition to our society circles.

TnE anti-third termers seem to have made a failure all around. We would advise them to go pack themselves in ice, and prepare themselves to keep awhile for Grant will be the nominee of ihe Chicago Convention.

NOTES OF INTEREST.

Fire In the Oil leglam.

BRADFORD, PA.,

May

6.—A

most de

structive series of oil fires devastated the northern oil fields to-day. At this writing it is estimated that fully five hundred were burned. It might be proper to say that the oil well rig consists of an engine an engine house, boiler and boiler-house, tank and tank-house, belt house and der rick. The tanks average250 barrels each, and in most cases were full to overflow ing.

About noou today, while twenty quart torpedo was being lowered in Brad ley's No. 6, on the Taylor farm, the well made a sudden flow, causing a terrible ex plosion, demolishing the derrick, and set ting the rig on fire.

The torpedo shooter and his assistant had a miraculous escape front death. A strong west wind was blowing, and in an incredible short time the fire had spread to adjoining wells.

The woods caught fire, and Ihe wind sent the flames galloping over the ridge to Row City, burning about 100 welN in its fiery course. Rew City, a town of perhaps 500 inhabitants, was wiped from the face of oildom.

It was reported that two women and five children were burned to death. Latest reports confirm the rumor. Names can not be ascertained.

Inanrreetlon In

Cuba.

The Madrid correspondent of Ihe Her aid telegraphs as follows:

A very great sensation has been deal ed in political circles lien1 by the receipt to-day two telegrams from the Governor General of Cuba, stating that a con spiracy has been discovered in one of the central departments of the island. The dispatches announce that the troops were immediately called into regulation, and that" already, forty-two of the principal promoters of the intended movements have been arrested.

The opinion in official circles, I hear, is that the present, agitation ami this new attempt at insurrection in the Central De partment of the Island are intimately con nccted with a revolutionary movement in the .United States and Central America, oi which the Government has intelligence. The authorities profess to have received information that three filibustering expeditions started last month from New Orleans and Central America.

Brisk Pout-Oldce Bualne«a. WASHINGTON,

May 6.—It is stated at

the Postofflce Department that there had never been a time in tho history of the Government when so many new postoffices were being established. There is ajso a largely increased volume of postal business all over the country, but. psrticularly in the West.

Weak-kneed Anti-Third Termer*. Private dispatches received here represent the St. Louis Anti-Third Term Conven tion as not leing a great success. The trouble, as usual from a Washington standpoint, seems to be the disinclination of many real anti-third termers to take an active part. They are not sufficiently out of the woods.
