Boatoo Pw: A Western editor, whosff style of writing

calculated to arouse thr people to

dceda of &ore, being himself not much on the muscle, found it necessary to keep a fighting editor, and he had a speaking tube connected with the heelers room to call him when danger required. One day a gentleman to whom the editor had re ferred a* "a cross-eyed dromedary," came in to request a correction, and as the fighting editor was out, he didn't respond to the signal of distress, and while the editor and his visitor were on the floor under the desk, the former agreed to correct the mistake, and the irate man left. Pretty soon a gentleman from the rural districts came in to give the editor a big squash and get a notice, and about that time the' fighting editor returned, and a boy in his room told him that the boas wanted help. The man of war wa#v quick to respond, aud daithiug into the chiefs room and fr«e ing the latter in a somewhat disordered condition, the result of his previous visit, he thought the countryman was the cause of it, and clutcthed him. %nd after staving up some furniture, run the victim acro&t the street to where an empty hearse was ^landing in front of an undertaker's shop, into the vehicle he jammed the farmer and shut the door. The commotion he had created scared the horses attached to the hearse, and they started off on the dead run. People soon noticed the runaway and run after it, and were shocked at beholding the hearse collide wi'.h a post and complete wreck aud their horror at seeing a human lody precipitated to the sidewalk, was only equaled by their amazement at seeing it spring nimbly to its feet and take off across the country yelling murder. They thought it was an attempt to bury a man alive, and part of them went aud got the undertaker to lynch him, while the rest pursued the farmer, who was found hiding in a swamp. And after lie was brought in. it took over three hours to gel matters explained, and then the farmer went 1hfore a justice of the jeace and made affidavit thai he hoped to l»e struck by lightning if he ever entered a newspaper office again.

The Wrung Man.

Detroit Vrtv I'rvaK. When David Hmith reached home the other evening, his wife told him that a red headed man had leaned on the front fence and thrown a kiss at her a* she sat in the window. She looked for a tiatiron to throw at him, of- course, but he skinjH'd away to return in half an hour and repeat the performance. When David heard of these things he hankered for

ffore,

and he went out to look for a redleaded man wearing,a black hat. He soon found one, ami without any unnecessary delay he went for him. Tly? si ranker didn't seem to object, and heciandled limself

ho

\Cell that David was in the

litch in about a minute with two black eyes. "The charge is sturbing the peace," saitl his Honor as the prisoner came out "What right bad any man to wink at my wife?" "The law knows nothing of the winking matter. It must deal directly with you on the charge specified. What Is your defense?" "These two black eyes und a sore head,' was the blunt reply. "That won't count here, Mr. Stevens, I shall flne.you $f." "Ml pay it, but I'm going to hunt for that chap!" "Better not let any more men hunt for you! You look bad*in the face just now, and one more dose would use you up. The charge is correct, air, and you can go. Haw 1x»ef is good for the swelling, aud Bijah has lots of court plaster. Vie will now try the plain drunks in a batch."

Ileum** Built by Wm. Penn.

The houses on Letitia street, between Market and Chestnut, which was built by Wm. Penn for his daughter L«tetia, and in which she lived and died, has recently l»cen purchased by J. A. Janney. who contemplates tearing it down for the purpose of making an addition to his warehouse adjoining. The buildiug has been used as a saloon, during the last twenty eight years, and adjoining it is the old mansion once occupied by Penn, and which has also been occupied for some time as a saloon. An unsuccessful attempt has been made to purchase the last named house. It was the first brick house in Philadelphia. Having been built by Penn, in

!6oS,

the materials used

in its construction having been imported from Kngtand, The firm has offered the Letlti* House to the Pennsylvania Historical Society, with the privilege of tearing it down and removing it: Mr. Geo. \V. Child* has offered to bear the ex pentcs of removing It to the park and having it erected in its original style, ami his offer will undoubtedly be accept ed as soon as the society^ convinces cer tain of its members as to the Identity of the house, upon which point they seem to be incredulous. It is to be hoped that the Penn House will also be purchased, in which ev*nt the Messrs. Janney offer to give It, too, lo the Historical Society.

The question of laying a cable from Haltfas to Bermuda is being *«it*ted by the various members of ibe British gat emment and of Parliament, as well a* by certain prominent business men of Lon don. An editor whose office waa taken ftc the den of a taxidermist, had some trouble to explain that so far from stuffing birds, and minks, and things, he bad to "hustle around pretty lively in order to get enough stuffing for himself.

The most treacherous and cruel thing on earth is an empty old gun that has been laid away in the garret or knocked around as a plaything for ten or fifteen years. You may snap it at stump all day, and it will miss nre every time, hut the very first time you snap It at your brother, or your siMer, or your sweetheart—oang! and you've shot a bole through Somebody.

A gentleman entered a grocery store in Indiana recently, and asked for a gallon of molasses. 'Having drawn if, the storekeeper asked him what he would take it home in. "In my haL" promptly replied the customer, calmly holding out a new silk hat, into which the grocer, not to be outdone in coolness, poured the fluid. Then the customer jammed (he hat over the grocer's head, and having thus occupied his attention, took what money there was in the till and skipped out.

A masked burglar entered a room where a man and his wife lay asleep. They both awoke, when the robber pointed a pistol at their heads and quietly backed out of the room, and got off witn his plunder. The startled slmnberers were terribly frightened, "the man's hair turning white before morning.3 rhe woman waa as much ^scared as her husband, but upon examining her hair, which hung over the hack of a chair, it yas found not to haye changed a par* ticle.'
