More Convenience*.
Wt» jLsk every farmer, the half day of rainy or idle time, to Kit down and fceridtmly inquire of himself if there are iiot many conveniences needed about th# hotwe, bant, cril« and Ktable« which he could easily and eheaply construct. Confine thi.s investigation not entirely to conveniences for himm lf, but extend it to all departments—for the wife, daughter*, sons and hired help. Do you wade tit rough mud to the barn in rains and in thaws of the spring? How easilv this could be obviated by gravel or plank walks. Are the members of your family exposed to the same inconvenience in going to the well the smoke-house, the water-closet, the chicken house, or even to the front gate? And yet some people think you are a good hnsbanu and father. How are the steps to go into your cellar? Are they in good order, and are the steps of the "proper height for your over-burdened wife to descend or ascend easily? Is the wood house distant and inconvenient, or have you no such convenience, leaving your family to dig the wood from under the snow in winter, or use it dripping with water in summer/
For feeding and watering the stock, is it as convenient and labor-saving as it could be? The main cribs should be a distance from the barn *aiul stables, bnt for convenience for feeding there should be a place near the horses for a load or two of corn and oats for feeding. There should be easy and safe ladders for ascending mows or stable lofts. Men and loys are seriously injured for life by pulling themselves tip by their arms several times

tlav. There should be
a corner for bedding for horses, and a trap door for dropping it down behind the horses. If this is not the case, the difficulty of obtaining it in bad wedther deprives the horses of this comfort when they need it most. Kvery farm should have a wheelbarrow, which any handy man can make himself. A hand truck is convenient for hauling heavy articles, such as bags of jpiin, moving stoves in the fall and spring, and hundreds of other nurposes. A slight but strong skid for loading and unloading milt barrels, etc., can be made on a wet or leisure day, should bo in

A Sunday School teacher asked a little girl who was the first man. She answered that she didn't know. The Question was then put to an Irish girl, who answered, "Adam, sir." with apparent satisfaction. La!" said the first child,u you needn't feel so grand about it—he wasn't uti Irishman!"
Hon. John Bright, the
statesman, at a banquet, spoke of the greatness of the United States in the following flattering manner "Its population now has reached to 50,000,000, which is nearly half or about half more than the whole population of Great Britain and Ireland at this day. I have no doubt there are scores in this room who, before they live to the age I have attained to, will live to see the day when the population of the United States will be more than double what it now is, and that it will pass 100,000,000 of people.

place, and handy when demanded. A rack should be made in the mtxjt publfc room of the bam for hanging tip forks, scoop shovel, spades, idle halters, etc. And thus, if the farmer will repair to to his barn and spend otherwise idle time in planning conveniences, ho will find that Iu1 has no such time to hang heavily on his hands. And these conveniences will make life pleasanter, the family happier, and home the best place to stay.
Childhood of James Watt. Watt was, from bis b|rth, of an e: tretnelv delicate constitution, unfitted for taking part in the common sports of boys, ami little prepared for those struggles with difficulties which afterwards marked his life. His mother, who was a woman no less remarkable for her intelligence than for her personal graces, taught him to road when scarcely out of his infancy and his father, who was a ship carpenter and dealer in naval stores, at Greenock, added a little writing and arithmetic. In the latter the child nipidly improved, and he was fond of working out his sums with a pencil upon wraps of paper, or more commonly with a piece of chalk upon the floor, sometimes his only amusement when the severe headaches to which he waft subject, compelled his parents to keep him at home.
On one occasion, when he was bending over a stone hearth with the usual piece of chalk, a visitor wild was present remarked to the father: "The bov ought to be sent to a public school, ami not 1x permitted to idle awav bis time at home,*' "I'jook at what my child is doing lefore von blame him,"* returned the rather. The child of six years of age was endeavoring to solve a problem in geometry. Another time lie was scolded by hw aunt Muirhend, while taking tea at Mrs, Watts', for hisaswimed indolence* '•Jimmy,** Bakl the worthy lady, solemnly, never saw tuch m» wle «*»y von am Pray, take ft book and employ vourmelf tt*fully for the Ust honr yon have not spoken one *oro, foot taken of th* lid of that kettle and pot it on a*fttn, holding now a cop and then a spoon owr the sieiam, catching and counting the drops il falls into.
