VOL. 1.—NO. 60. TERRE I1AUTE, IND., WEDNESDAY, APRIL 28, 1880.-3:30 P.M. PRICE 3 CENTS.

Hear Laura Ream at Dowllng Hall to-night. She will lecture on Nevada and California. —About 3 o'clock this morning occurred tha death of Leopold L. Goodman, an old and respected citizen of this city. Mr. Goodman was in his fifty-sixth year. He was a native of Bavaria, Germany, and has lived here more than thirty years.

His death was caused ^jy heart disease. He retired in apparently good health, and the first intimation the famiiy had of his bad condition, was a gurgle in his throat which his wife heard, and upon examination he was found to be dying. —A fight occurred about 6 o'clock last night between two negroes, down near the gas works, in which one of the participants had his hand badly cut. It seems that a burly negro by the name of Salters, has been causing considerable trouble lately by "blowing" at the other boys about the place, but no one seemed inclined to engage in a battle with him until last night, when one of the Gas Works' employees thought he had taken about as much as he could well stand so he sailed into Salters, and the consequence was a series of bruises on both sides. Salters was arrested and taken this morning before 'Squire Quigley, and what he got there we have not been able as yet to ascertain. —The Are department were called about 3 o'clock this A. M. to extinguish afire in the Everlasting Elevator Bucket Co's. factory. It seems that one of the empleyees had been at work about 5 o'clock at the soldering bench and had* allowed a coal to drop from the stove which smoldered away so as to attract the attention of no one to it. The heat remaining in this fragment is supposed to be the cause of the fire. The action of the fire department on this occasion is worthy of the attention of our citizens. It is stated by an eye-witness, that on the Chief's ordering one of his men to do a certain thing, the worthy employee obeyed by telling the Chief to do it himself. It can be plainly seen by any person of thought, that such actions as this will ruin any organization and if the chief of the department has no more control over his men than is illustrated by this occurrence, the institution will fall to meet the purpose for which it is supported. The loss arising from the fire this morning will not exceed $200. About as much if not more damage was done by the water than the fire.

The manner of obtaining the jury is as follows: The*County Clerk selects forty tax payers living in the county, and the contestants meet and each in turn strikes out the name of one juryman who is objected to. This is continued until sixteen names are left and from these the twelve jurymen will be selected on the day of trial. The following are the names selected yesterday: Robert Black, Philip Randolph, Jno. N. Rhyan. Jno. Rankin, Harvey Evans, Richard W. Brotherton, II. S. 'real, Jno. VanCleave, Samuel S.'Moore, Wesley Hull, Warren Souls, Samuel Cheek, Wm. C. Forbes and Isaac Shull.

An Editor's Life.

One of the beauties and charms of an editor's life is in his deadheading it on all occasions. No one who lias ever tasted of the sweets of that bliss can begin to take in its glory and its happiness. He does $ 100 worth of advertising for a rail road, and sometime gets a "pass" for rear, rides $25 worth and then lie is ooked upon as a 'deadhead or a halfblown deadbcat. He "puffs" a concert troupe 10 worth and gets $1 in Y,ornpli mentaries," and is thus passed "free." It the hall is crowded he is begrudged 1 he room he occupies, for if his complimentaries were paying tickets the troupe would be so much in pocket. He blows and puffs a church festival free to any desired extent, and does the poster printing at half rates, and rarelj' gets a "thank you" for it. It goes as apart of his duty as an editor. He docs more work gratuitously for the town and com munity than all the rest of the population put together, and gets cursed for it all, while in many instances where a man who donates a few dollars for the Fourth of July, base-ball club or church, is gratefully remembered. Oh, it is a sweet thing to be an editor. He passes "free," you know.— Utica Qhnerner.
