•-•The wreck of .steamer No. 2 yesterday was apiece of wanton carelessness on the part of the fire department. In the first place, every person in the city who knows anything about otir water works system, knows that there is no excuse for a steamer going on Main street at a break neck *peed with two or three men yelling like a lot of Comanche Indians. The fire department knew this steamer was in bad repair If the engineer tells lhe truth about notifying the proper authority eight months ago, and tht» department should l»e made pay the damage caused by their own negligence.
Carnival of Author*.
The scene at Dowling Hall last night was leyond description. The ladles of the Congregational Church assisted by their friends, have arranged the hall in the most artistic manner, representing with scenes and characters from the most noted authors. "Old Curiosity Shop," "Snow Bound/* "The Alhambra,*' charac tens from Shakespeare, "The Spanish Court," "The Grotto," "Egypt," etc.
The characters were excellent and there nevrr was a prettier or more touching **rne than that of the beautiful young ladies as they floated by in the grand march. They were indeed to be admired, with their loose tirssrs rioting over their shoulder* like waves of sunbeams kissed by the dews of youth. Their eyes wore an expression bright and soft as the dawn, passing away like the creature of pleasant dreams. Their modesty and siatelincss made them look as if they could leave the festive scene and bow their heads neath the bright cold stars awl mingle their breath with the eternal snows of purity and holiness.

The Flee and a (Mrncral Niitn«h-iip. Yesterday afternoon about.5 o'clock the alarm of fire wassounded from the Fourth ward engine house. The cause of the alarm was the emission of smoke from the roof of the building occupied by Mr. Walmsley. near the corner of Chestnut and Fourth streets. There seemed to be a defective Hue and a few sparks fell upon the roof causing the most unnecessary alarm, for it appears that either one of the two things was true: the firemen thought that the city was on fire or else they knew there was no particular danger and thought they would make a hey day sort of show. Then* occurcd, to say the least of it, an exceedingly strange accident which was very hard to reconcile with what an honest, fair-minded man would call proper diligence and care in handling the horses attached to the engine coming down Cherry street, west

r» will be remembered that a few weeks ago a fearful cyclone passed over India napolis, destroying everything in its way. It so happened that the residence of Mrs. Dr. Dunlap. where Miss Laura Ream, the well known Cincinnati Commercial correspondent had apart tneuta, was in the way of the cyclone. street, for as the engine came tearing down the street, almost as fast as they could go, the driver did not attempt to check the speed of the horses in the least, and as the engine turned the comer round into Fourth the -horses were going with so much speed that the whole affair tipped almost bottom side upwards, and collided with, or rather run down a buggy and horse that stood hitched in front of Fosters' fnrnature store, causing a general demolition of both furniture and buggy, and even stripped the horn of his entire gearing happily no one was hurt. The entire loss to the city in paying for the buggy ami furniture smashed up, and the injury done to the engine, for it was Iwdly demo!ished. will reach over one thousand dollars, making a rough guessC How is this for Democratic economy and good government.
