The ball given by the nail feeders last night, at Armory Hall, was very largely attended, and a most pleasant time enJoyed.
V-+-A gentleman living in the Second ward told us yesterday that if Grant was nominated he wouldn't vote at all. We telegraphed to Grant at once, and he immediately withdrew, and said if that was true he could not afford to go Into the contest.
-Prof. Hodgin lectured on the Northwest Territory to a fine audience at the Baptist church last evening. He related the principle events connected with the early acquisition and settlement of this very important part, of our country. The ordinance of 17B7 was made one of the prominent topics, and its value and influence upon the .settlement and growth of the territory were well shown.
The history of the purchase of about fl,000,000 acres of land in what is now Southern Ohio, by De Cutler, agent of an eastern land company, and the subsequent settlement there of a very large colony, was one of the most interesting features of the lecture. The whole subject was full of instructive facts, and was render ed in a pleasant and attractive manner.
A Mounter Flow.
The largest plow that was ever known to be- made was recently turned out by an Illinois firm of agricultural machinery makers, for use on flic St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern railway. It iscalcu lated to cut a ditch thirty inches wide, and two feet deep, and is worked by attaching It to a platform car of a construction train by means of timbers framed and extending out so that the plow cuts a ditch a sufficient distance from the track. It cuts a furrow eight inches deep each time, requiring three of them to reach the proper depth, and it will make one mile of ditch two feet deep and three feet wide every four hours, thus doing the work of about four thousand men. The beam is made of swamp oak, and is eight inches by fourteen inches, the land side being made of bar iron eight Jynches wide and an inch and a half thick, which had to be forged expressly for the purpose. Its total weight is 1,700 pounds. The use of this plow will mark an era In all ditching work, especially in connection with railways.
