THUR8DAY, APRIL 8, 1880.
THE CITY.
SfOTICR
The public will lake notice that all bills doe to and from the DAILY NJEWSup to Jiarch 31st, will be settled by Seaman, Lewi* & Co., and that on and after March 81, 1880, E. P. Beauchamp alone will be responsible for business contracts in the name of the DAILY NEWS.

Si Hoffman was defeated by a young man of the name of Eshelby, for Comptroller of the city of Cincinnati in Monday's election.
The Terre Haute Gazette of this city in commenting on it says the Democrats should chose better men than Si Hoffman to represent them.
No doubt they would but it is against their politics to cross the fence for candidates.
THE AUTHOHS CARNIVAL.
The preparation for this beautiful and artistic festival are rapidly advancing. The stage entertainment will be changed every night, and will be of a particularly interesting character. The seats will not be taken out of the gallery, so that those who wish can sit there and watch the en'tertainment on the stage and at the same time view the gorgeous panorama encircling the walls of the main hall. The young lady who is to pose for Mr. Pease's celebrated marble statuary is said by good judge.A to be the handsomest girl in Terre Haute.
The following extract will enable our readers to get some idea of the magnilicence of the stage entertainment alone, exclusive of the grandness of the rest of the festival:
Last night the carnival was thronged. It was only by patience and much muscnlar exertion that one could get near enough to the most popular booths. The booths were full and the tableaux were exceptionally good. The first was entitled "Pictures in the Fire," an ingenious combination, and one of the finest tableaux given during the season. The next was the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots. The headsman standing at the summit of the large and most effectively arranged group, ought to have protected it from the remark of one lady who saw it, that it was "perfectly lovely," but the fault was not with the tableau, but with the limited vocabulary of the lady in question. This was followed by an exquisite "statuary" tableau of "Music," an apparently marble figure bending over a harp. The la&t tableau, which succeeded the dress pa rade, was "The Lay of the Lost Minstrel," a very fine tableau, the characters of which were furnished from the already famous Scott booth.
These tableaux have been under Hie sole direction of Mr. F. P, Pease, to whom the public are indebted for a great deal of excellent entertainment. The grouping of figures and of colors which characterized all these tableaux evince no small amount of artistic talent on Mr. Pease's part. To group fifty or sixty persons so as to vividly portray some historic event or some idea is not a task that every one could accomplish. It would be difficult to conceive of anything more spirated than the tableaux of "Hiawatha" and "War,M more striking than "The Execution of Mary. Queen of Scots," Or "Toilet of Venus," and "Island of Jewels^',
IHkMr. Barber, of the Crapo House, "returned yesterday from Paris, Ills., where, as we stated in Tuesday's issue, he had gone in search of the buggy and harness stolen from Barber and Rafferty, last Thursday. Mr. Barber stated that he pursued the thief through Edgar, Vermillion and Douglass counties before overtaking him. In his (light the thief evaded all telegraphic points, which made the pursuit very difficult.
When Mr. Barber rode up to him, the thief never suspected him until he brought out his repeater to a horizontal position, ordering him to halt The fellow threw up his hands and was made to It* out of the buggy and mount his (Barhehs) horse. Barber then tied him upon the horse, not quite A* la matcpa, and getting Into the buggy, led him into Newman, where he was jailed over night
The fellow claimed to be an ex-show-man and said he wanted the buggy for his own use.
He refused to give hia name, and in making out A warrant for hk arrest the Prosecuting Attorney called him cuss who refused to tell his name."
The fellow will be prosecuted in Edgar county and the horse unless claimed as stolen property by some one else will be •okl to pa? damages*
