Ufin't Fall to Vote.

On next Monday the Republican voters of Vigo county will uufurl the banner of Equality, Freedom and Right. Let no Republican be influenced by personal feeling, but vote Solid Republieau principles. There may be men on the ticket whom you dislike, but remember that when tbey were nominated in the convention there was understood to 1MJ some quality about them which made them strong in the party, and you cannot afford to

influenced by any personal feeling, which will be in the interest of-Democ-racy.

0 In «lie I lly liable?

We understand it is the intention of the parties along Main street, where windows were broken by tlie roughs on Friday evening, to firing suit against the city to secure the vahie of the property destroyed. We are inclined to the opinion that such a suit can lie maintained. The object of a city government is to protect citizens in their rights of person and property, ami wiim )«. comes so feeble, so corrupt or so negligent that these rights ore not protected and secured, then it becomes responsible in Its Corporate capacity for nil individual damage sustained.

Why the police force was not on Main street at the time the property was destroyed, we do not now stop to enquire. It is enough to know the damage wns done, and the city government, in the eyes of the law, Is presumed, by its negligence, to have permitted it. If the oflicers were inefficient, then the appointing power Is to blame. If the officers were negligent, then they should be dismissed, and the city pay the damages occasioned by their neglect. In every view we can take of It, it does seem to us the city is liable In the first place, and the Democrat ic party in the second place, for appoint ing such men to prominent police posi tious. If the party had been more careful in selecting the city police, then all this trouble and expense to the city might have been avoided. At any rate, has not the time come, when other and better men should lie selected to take the manage menV of our city affairs, "i "j

State Convention is not far in the distance, and it behooves the Republican iparty to be on the alert, and look well to the selection of a strong man to make the race for Governor. We must not underate the strength of the Democratic party in this State. It is strong, most unscrupulous and very corrupt, therefore very dan gerous. Knowing this to be the fact, the Republican party should select from the names presented to the convention the one who will give the party the most •strength. We think that man is the lion. M. C.
