#-»-In another column we reprint ftt?m the N. T. Graphic, a letter from Hartford, which is Interesting reading! See the reference to the display of marble in the Hartford Cemetery. A. few days since. We printed something from Hon Wm Mack, about' 'Cemeteries." Coupling the two, the Dailt News desires to give its opinions—but in this opinion, for local pride's^Sake, leave out the City Cemetery (What is the new name?) of Terre Haute For 40 ~yesrs since Ifce lown burying ground of America was often a neglected Spot. To-day hundreds of our cemeteries are superior in point of beauty and adornment to the gloomy and over praised Pere la Chaise, of Paris. But one extreme has been exchanged for another. The long and fulsome epitaph of a past generation has given place to hundreds of towering marble and granite shafts. The general resemblance of the cemetery to the stonecritter's yard on a ljfge scale yearly increases These tons on tons of carved stone and marble erected over She remains of doubtless very good, and more or less ordinary people, suggest that the competition foi" house, parlor and dress display majf even be carried into the graveyard. It looks sometimes as though Jones, outdone his life long by Smith in general style, had, dying a year or two later, resolved on a bigger .and costlier monument to his memory. Hence the ruling passion strong in death. Of possibly the 10 tons of carving with' an angel atop pointing to a purer world free from strifes, erivyings and passion may be erected to Smith's son or daughter, in case the iron chair in the burial plot fronting the monument suggests how Smith may visit the place on Sundays and contemplate with secret satisfaction, not only the memory of his departed offspring but a monument thereunto five tons heavier and seven feet higher than that erected to Joiles over the ay. For the human heart is still deceitful tf not so desperately wicked as of yore, and human motives are oft times most difficult to track to their source.
