It was reported in Washington yesterday that orders had been issued to use regular troops in San Francisco in case of an attack by the mob upon the Chinese quarters, Gen, Sherman says the Presient is urged to afford the protection of the troops upon the ground that, the United Suites is bound to protect the Chinese. The posse comitatus law is held t# stand in the way of using the troops. Gen Sherman expresses the opinion that the troops, will not be employed unless the Governor.of California ask« for their aid. The President and Secretary Evarts iave the matter,under ^rious-considera-tion. The President's acti^ will be'governed bv the developments. The Chinese minister was not visible last night, Tut there is no doubt in diplomatic circles that he haa officially asked Evarts for protection/to his countrymen.

terms oi purchase. -An important decision was "rendered by the Supreme Court on Saturday, in the case of tno State ex rel. Hamilton vs. Forkner opinion by Judge Worden. The court holds that the fees derived from the issuing of licenses to retail intoxicating liquors do not, tinder the statute, become, apart of the permanent common school fund, the^ income only of which is to be applied to the purposes of tuition, but constitute a paft of the school revenue-for tuition, to be applied in gross to the purposes of tuition.

Every place in Covington was closed ex cept "the drug stores, and they sold nothing whatever .exoept on prescriptions. The names of. the carriage drivers who brought people to the churches, and in some instances the names of ministers, ami and organists were written down for arrest to-day. The street-cars were running under the provision of a law passed Saturday exempting them from the penalties of the Sunday law.
