California’s Public Schools.

Facts as to the development of the publlcschool system of California show that although it is only forty-seven years since the first schoolhouse wea jrallt Is. the State, yet now the annual expenditure for public schools is nearly $6,000,000, and 6,500. teachers are employed in instructing 240,000 pupils. Those teachers are ps.dd more liberally than in any other State, and they rank high in efficiency. The State University and its affiliated colleges have been very liberally endowed, and the competition of Stanford University has helped Instead of Injuring It The bequest of J. 0.
