The word “news” has been fancifully derived from the initial letters of the four cardinal points of the compassnorth, east, west and south. In a book entitled "Wit’s Recreations,” which first appeared about IG4O, appear the following lines anent the subject: “When news doth come, if any would discuss The letter of the word, resolve it thus: News is conveyed by letter, word or mouth, And comes from north, east’ west, or south.” It takes a truly noble nature to be nobly conquered, to bury in the grave of the dead issue all bitterness and hard feeling.
