Mr. Tut pie is right. Th > Ding*, ley tariff is a good thing for th trusts, but it is rough on Fe federa treasury. Customs revenue is derived from imports. The DiDgley tariff lies reduced this re. venue because it has levied practically prohibitive v a tes. The Dingley law gives opporlunity for exacting tribute from the consnratr, which opportunity the manufacturing combines are improving Ho that Dingleyism diverts reveo from the treasuryinto the pockets of the monopolists. It is a ‘ robber” tariff, just as all hign tariffs are robbers. - Lafnyette Joui al (dtm.). The Mrnon for the thirdweek in June earned $62,914, an increase of $2,623. Sampson The report of the Disappoints commodore to tfe His captain, and of sh Friends. captain to tiie gov-, ernment, have been made public We ha\ e searched the captain’s report for a single expression of the piaise or credit which, omitted from h 7 s early dispatches, his friends promised would be accorded to the commodore in his extender account of the battle. W e have not found it. In the whole length and breadth of "Admiral” Sampson’s report on the annihilation ofj Cervera’s fleet the name of the man under whom the annihilating was done isimr-ntione 1 exactly twice. The captain who commands a commodore says: “Commodorj Schley, whose chief of staff had gone on board to receive the surrender, hfd direoted that all their personal eflecls should be retained by the officers. This order i did n t modisy. * * * The reports of Commodore W- S. Schley an of the commanding officers are inclosed.” The Brooklyn’s individual part in the fighting is briefly alluded to, tempered with this piece of faint acknowledgment: “The Brooklyn’s westerly blockading pi s tio i gave her an advantage in the oka e which she maintained o the tnd, and sh» employed h;r fine battery with telling effect.” This is the meed of praise for the hero who won the fight. This is the prase of his ship that it "had an advantage and maintain ad it.” Here ar the justice and generosity the administration favorite’s friends proclaimed fiom the housetops he would show the superior officer he had put under him just as soon as he got a chance. In distinct contrast ,s ti e report of Schley. The commodore in the black alpaca coat has applauded every ship commander who came usder his observation during the fight, and many the minor offi cers down to aid including the carpenter of the Brooklyn. Full credit is given to every man w! o conspicuously helped in gaining the victory, and the simple statement of the manner in whi< h the Brooklyn’s crew stood to their guns while their ship was under the con verged fire of three of the enemy’s vessels is the only evidence we have of the peril undergo e by the modest man who wrote the report.
We fear (?apt. Sampson has di jappointed his fr ends. His grudging references to Schley are not the cheerful and frank aeknowledg ment o. honor where honor is due they had led us to expect. The captain’s attitude is not creditable and can not be covered up bv sin* ister suggestions and veiled insinx utions about Schley’s failure to regard previous orders. Had Ceivera escaped we believe Commodore Schley would have been edven a very prominent place in the report. (Jervera did not escape, and Schley has an enviable place in the hearts of the Ameri can people. As we have sa ,- d before, Sampson wasn’t tbeie; Schley was. —Chicago Journal. Every exchange we Have seen remarks on the tact tnat tba Wallace Shows is the one show that really exhibits everything that it advertises. At Rensselaer, Wednesday, August 3d.
The welfare of babies is engaging the attention of Dr. Hurty, secretary of the state board of health, and in a few days he will distribute circulars intended to reduce mortality of Indiana chil** dren. He prefaces the circular with the statement that 25 out of ICO babies cie before they are one year old and 40 or 50 out of 100 die before the end of the fifth year. Dr. Hurtv will try to reduce this large per cent. Tnis month, secretaries of coun ty boards of health will report to him the nam e and addressesof paren s to whom children were born and to these parents will be sent fro*; the circular, which will have*bnef ebapt rs on cleanliness of person and premises, fresh a r, clothing, nursery, food, diseases of childhood, sterilization of milk and sterilization of water. It is not expected that all the circulars distributed will do good. The circular deals entirely with prevents tive treatment Another pamphlet already bei- g distributed sets forth wise precautions against cholera infantum, cholera morbus and dysentery... Recent re orts show many deaths from cholera infantum A DISMA LFAILURE. Tne attempt to kil off the Wa basil Plain Dealer because its able editor, Charles Haas, had opinions of his own and the manliness to express them, has resulted in a dismal failure, as is nearly always the case i such undertaking . The paper started i. opposition to the Plain Dealer, called The Tribune, wa* the means of bankrupting severa individuals tvho put monev into it, and now, after frequent changes in management, tie paper that was started to kill eff the Plain Dealer has gone "where the woodbine twineth and the wliangdoodle mourneth.” 8o says the Va paraiso Messenger.
We invite the attention of Deni ci’ats to the art'cle cn fourth page copied from South Bend Times, concerning the attitude of Judge McCabe in the trustee case recent ly decided by the Supreme court.
