Engineer M. of W. I*>e of the B. & O. line* west of the Ohio river hits been experimenting during the past year or two with stag for balhist. His plan is to put about one foot under the ties and h makes very good ballast. About 18 miles of the Akron division have been improved in this way, but Mr. Lee's preference is for gravel when he can get it. During the past season on the TransOhio division he lias put in 143 miles of new ballast, the priuelpal |>art of which was good, dean gravel, la addition,to the ballasting, the Trans-Ohio division has had 4GO.I*HI new cross ties, and there have been 31 miles of new 75-pound steel rail laid, replacing tkl-pound rails.
