Sleeps Under His “Awful Epitaph."
At Vineland, N. J., the other day, was buried Jeremiah Hacker, poet, author aod noted Infidel. Hacker, who was 94 years old, became an infidel in his boyhood, and throughout his life taught infidel ideas, firm In the belief that he was doing good. He spent a fortune in inculcating his ideas. When his wife died, six years ago, Mb Hacker erect c 3 two totnibetones on his lot at Sllooa Cemetery. On hto wife’s was inscribed underneath the usual legend, the question: “Where is God?* On his own tombstone was carved the following: “The Angry, Wrathful Bible; God Is a Myth.” Theos tombstones, so dose to monuments piously inscribed, caused much comment, and many persons visited the graveyard to see those awful tombstones. Lot owners appealed to toe trustees to have the offensive dabs removed, bnt the trustees became divided over the question, and the tomb■teUM are still standing. , IfJENIMGKK WOOLS - faWa premonition of her untimely t: < She was a victim of morbidness a; Jt rouged for rest from wandering home Jeaaly about the world. GRAINS OF GOLD.
We prtj the most fcr we de bo need. Siu always carries a knife under cloak. A fool never learns anything from j mistake. No man does h!s best who worln only for pay. A self-made man always spoils tb< Job somewhere. The cheerful giver is always the on Who givesinueh. Health is another word for tempo, ance and exercise. What a multitude of ugly sins cat hide behind one doubt. The devil won’t let a stingy mat have any mercy on himself. That man is a thief who is boner, only because he is watched. The birds with the brightest fentl, ers do not sing the sweetest. The sheep that goes astray nevi', finds a green pasture for itself. We hate our own sins when we st‘hem full grown In somebody else. There is a policeman called Tim; Hid he says to /y lingering son o mant “Move on.” We will find ;i<> permanent resting place in this Ufa And to-morrow may find us gone.
STUB ENDS OF THOUGHT.
Money is not the measure of merit, Merey is the melody of the Master. Love is a natural product of human sty. True religion Is the perfect demo;’ racy. A woman has no use for a dun»A Cupid. Possession is pursuit with the pit! punched out Epigrams are diamonds In the grave of conversation.
Fifty Years Ago.
This is the cradle in which there grew ' That thought of a philanthropic brain; A remedy that would make life new For the multitudes that were racked with pain. ’Twas sarsaparilla, as made, you know By Ayer, some jo years ago.
Ayer’s Sarsaparilla was in its infancy half a century agro. To-day it doth “bestride tho narrow world like a colossus." What is the secret of its power? Its cures! The number of them! The wonder of them! Imitators have followed it from the beginning of its success. They are still behind it. Wearing the oply medal granted to sarsaparilla in the World’s Fair of 1893, it points proudly to its record. Others imitate the remedy; they can’t imitate the record: 5o Years of Cures.
The Elephant as a Playfellow.
A man who has traveled In India « great deal says that an elephant Is a better playfellow for a boy than a dog. The native boys make tho elephants take them In swimming. They climb on the elephant’s back and ride In triumph to the best swimming hole. The elephant walks Into deep water and keeps right on walking until there’s nothing to be seen of him except his trunk and a good, level Island of back. The boy stands on the Island and yells like— well, just about like a good, healthy American, boy, and he dives off the Island, and the elephant grabs him with his trunk and puts him up onto “dry land,” and answers his yell with a cry that’s half snort and half whoop, and altogether he gives that boy just as good a time “in swimming” as if he had lived in America and never dreamed of using an elephant’s back for a spring board.
