Many newspapers are adopting various plans to meet the exigencies forced upon them by the hard times. Some conclude to try a reduction of the subscription prioe and hope to increase the number of subscribers; others annonnoe that they will throw off 50 cents per annum to delinquents who will square up arrearages. We do not think either of these plans will pay. With wheat stating at 50 @ 60, oats 10 @ 11, corn 15 @ 16 producers find it next to impossible to make their income meet their necessities. We have concluded, tor a time at least, to meet the emergency, in reducing our necessary cash outlay eaoh week by reducing the siss of the Sintinbl, and the prioe to $1: and so soon as we may feel justified in doing so will restore the paper to its former dimensions.

Getting Ready to Shout.
Under the Wilson tariff American manufacturers have increased their exports beyond the figures for tne McKinley law. The Wi) B on tariff has provided more reveaue than the law of LB9O. It bas resulted in a decrease of imports. Confessedly the McKinley law was a failure as a revenue producer or pr-mater of our foreign trade. Admittedly the Wilson law has succeeded where the McKinJey a'.-t oas failed. Now, iB il oossibb that the Republican majority proposes changing the schedules slightly in order that the Republican party can claim credit for the work of the Wilson law, since the present act is not to be ieplaced bj a McKinleyized measure? We* have pointed out that many of the features of the Wilson tariff w 11 be retained while the follies of the McKinley law are to be avoided. Of course there is no occ sion for any tariff changes at all, but it seems that the Republicans are unwilling that anv law of Democratic origin wnich is an improvement on the act of 1890 shall remain operative. The majority party proposes to make alterations which are not needed, and which will not produce a bill similar to the McKinley lunacy. Then, having done this, credit may be claimed by the Republicans for the results of tariff maderation inaugurated by the Democratic, party. Meantime business must suffer while the Republican program of appropriating Democratic tariff ideas progresses to completion.— Lafayette Journal. The Woman’s Relief Corps, requests all families, who have auy old clothing that they can Bpare, to send them to the home of Mrs. Ezra Clark,on Cullen street, chairman of the Relief Committee, and she will see that they are prooerly distributed among the needy ones, as this committee finds several families leally m need of cloihi g to keep tlum warm.
A Card From the Coroner.
The article concerning the Coroner for, as the writer sa s, uula vful y holding an inquest upon the body of a man who fell d<-aci upon the street, February Ist, 1897, in Rensselaer. I will simply quote the law on the point which designates the duties of the Coroner very plainly, to. wit: “Every CkvoLer, as soou as soon as he shall be notified I hat the dead body of any person suoposed to have come to his dea.li by viole ce or casualty is within bis coußtv shall immediately proceed to inquire upon view of the body how and in what manner he came to his death. Page 634, sec. 7954. Rev sion of Indiana statutes of 1894. Now the writer of the article states that everybody knew he died w ; th the paralysis of the brain.— The examining physician says that be died from paralysis of the heart. Of course the writer knew and answered for everybody. If the writ r had wi liheld his article until he Lad read the evidence ta ken at the inquest he would likely havesuppiessed his venomous peti. Now referringto the section of law quoted, would like to have the woid cans unity defined, and see if it does not cover tbs case referred to.
Now the fact qf the case are, the article was not meant to attack me as au officer, but to injure me persona'ly ng will readily bo seen • y any who may read it. The ar~ ole hurts n > >ne but tlnju’thor ~f it. lAm at my place of b . pyery hour of the day ana they oau determine wheth r I am “s )**’ eiently sober” to attend to my bu siness, or not, without being polled by the writei of «n artkl •so full of tna.ice. lq conclasi n would say 1 ag with the P.lot m i.s first assmti >n concerning th >. “useless olfiee of Coroner.” but it exists and th» l settles the matter.
