Without a Hod.

There is no hod-carrying in Japan. The natives have a method of transporting mortar which makes it seem more like play than work—to an onlooker. Three men were repairing the roof of a one-story building the other day by resetting the heavy black tiles in mortar. The mortar was mixed in a pile in the street, One man made thi»;up into balls of about six pounds weight, which he tossed up to a man who stood on a ladder midway between the roof and the ground. This man deftly caught the ball, and tossed it up to the man who stood on the roof. This was playing ball to good purpose.
