By the census of 1894 therp were 117,718 Buddhist temples, 52,511 priests, 44,123 monks and 8,99(5 students in the theological schools of Japan. There were 75,877 shinto priests, 136,652 temples, 163 national temples or cathedrals and-1,158 male and 228 fema e stud-nt*.
