VOORHEES TO MATTHEWS.
The Former Praises the Govern? or’s Speecu at Chicaameuga. Upon the return of Governor Matthews from his trip to the dedo icatory exercises on the Chickamauga battlefield he found await iug him tLe following letter from Senator Yoorhees, which had t:een written immediately upon the reading of the governor’s speech at the Indiana exercises by the senator: “Terre Haute, Sept. 19, ’95. “My Dear Governor—l wish to congratulate you on your Chickamauga speech. I have just read it ic The Sentinel. It is not only the best, in my judgmen , you have ever made, but it is by far the best produced by the great occasion on which it was delivered It will greatly add to yo ir already briL liautrepiuation andlrejoice in my heart that the goyernor ot he great and beloved sta*e of Indiana spoke sowell on such a notable and splendid national day. With kind regards, as ever, your fneud. “D. W. Yoorhees.”
Governor Matthews ly replied as follows: Executive Department, “Indianapolis, Ind., Sept. 25, ’95 “My Dear Senator I have read with pleasure your kind note of tlie 19th and thank you for Ungenerous expressions. Such commendation od this subject is to be highly valued. “Although our last legislature provided no means for Indiana’s representation on this great occasion, 1 still flattei myself that we, :n a modest an i unassuming way, made a fair shewing. Other states made ample provision, Ohio $15.000, Illinois 'Jud other sta es $5,000. Indiana, with the second largest number of military organzations engaged, and her troops in the most desperate encounters on that field, through her legislature did nothing. To have not officially represented would have been humiliating, so we did the best we could, am I believe Indiana held her own with otner states This is a sad commentary on a republican legislature, witn all their professions for the ve ierans. The old Bobbers who bore the brunt of that hard battie deserved better at at their hands. “The gem of all that week was Gordon’s oration. It was classic, and magnificently delivered, — What an rator he is! I wish you could have been there, too. Sincerely yours, “Claude Matthews. “The Hon. D. W. VoorUees, Terre Haute, ind.”
