The Political Reaction.
‘ I lipip is no gainsaying the fact,’ says thn New Albany Ledger, ‘that a most remarkabfe political reictio j is now in progress throughout the country—a reaction that is likely to bring tie Demociatic party back to its large majority of 1892. The evidence of this is manifest in many rays. The business men, the manufacturers, the farmers the skilled mechanic and la-* bor in every line are convinced that the plan of tariff tinkering and of currency tinkering outlined by the Republicans everywhere, in all the states, cannot fail, it successful, to upset business, demoralize values and bring on another panic, such as the country has just passed through, as the result of the McKinley tariff and the Republican silver legislation. The people are becoming too thoughtful, too conservative to tolerate any more such legislation as the Republicans pro* pose.
“Then cheie are other questions that have been forced by Republi can legislation in many states that will have a tremendous influence in the electio is to come .off this year and next. * * * * AU these are having their effect and adding power and impetus to the now fast coming political reaction. With these forces at work, and with the rapidly reviving prospeiity ok the entire country, there is reason for great encouragement tp Democrats in all the states.” It is probable the whisky league will make its test case to force its traffic upon the people, in the court of this county.
