LaPorte Argus; “One of the clearest explanations of the cause ot the fall of the price of silver is shown by the director of the mint in his report for 1893, In 1870 the world produced $51,000,000 of silver. Then the product bega ito increase at Lbe rate of f, om five *o ten million dollars a year until in 1873 the product was $81,000,000. The increase then grew faster and in 1892 it had gone up to sl9o 000,000, or 300 per cent. in twenty-two years. This enormous increase oould not help reducing the price, as it, was far beyond tue increase of population or business. In 1870 the gold product was $106,000,000. In 1873 it was $96,000,000 and from that on it ranged to about $100,000,000 for some i 5 vears. Then it began to go up some until in 1893 it reached the highest point given or $138,000,000 This shows an increase iu 22 years of 33 per cent. It seems as tho’ it ought not to be difficult to understand that gold would about maintain its position under a 33 percent inciease in 22y j ars, or that silver would go down under a 300 pe.’ cent increase in the same time. The law of supply and demand is inexorable and theories or arguments will not ciia rge it.’ The Indianapolis Journal a few days ago made the following remarkable admissions: “In nine-tenths of the cases where wages have been advanced during the past three months it has been the result of voluntary action on the part of the employ ers. * * * In no case that tue Journal has heard of, has any of the recent advances resulted from a strike. * * * It may be doubted if such a general advance of wageb was ever made in any other count/y without solicitation rr to avert troubles as that wh’ch has just been witness - ed. At the time of tl e passage of the Democratic tariff bill the Journal asserted repeatedly that wages wer j eternally ruined, and the in-

dustries of the United States paralyzed. Its latest language proves it to have b.*en a false prophet.
