The Power of Eloquence.
History teems with examples of the power of eloquence. A good story of an incident which occurred the other day in a Cardiganshire chapel, where the congregation was made up largely of seafaring men, is now going the rounds. “A figure used by the preacher related to a captain at his wit’s end when navigating his ship through a narrow, shallow, winding channel, abounding with rocks and strong currents. The faces of some of the listeners were perfect pctures as the preacher eloquently described the details and the difficulties of the voyage. The sliip ran against a bank, and in a thrilling voice the preacher shouted, •What shall we do?’ ‘God knows,’ cried an old sailor, ‘for you are going slam foremost I’ ”
