Squatters On the “Strip.”
(Remington Press.) Remington lias an interesting logal fight upou its hands. The facts in tne case as we understand them are a* follows: V hen tl eori inal plot of the town of Remington was made, a wedpo-ehaped piece of ground just south of the railroad’s right-of-way, extending from Main street oast to Kentucky street, was not laid out in lots or dedicated to the town. The atri is about 41 feet wide at Main street, and ends in a sharp point at Kentucky street The ground has been used more or leas by the public for year,. or that part of it oast of the Pan Handle stock yards, which occupy t:e west end of theati ip. About two years a<>o O. B. Mclntire and Thos. Horus w.n. to Fountain 00 tuty and saw Jesse H. Fordyce, who 1 dd out t 0 plot of the town and who had never disposed of h<a interest in thia paitioular atrip of land, and paid Mr. Fordvce SIOO to mako them a quit claim deed for the same, or that part extending from Main to Ohio street. Recently Mr. Hanis purchased Mr. Mclntire’s interest in the hnd and now seeks to ave the question of ownership settled. Last Monday he moved J. K Bingman’s shoe shop onto the strip north of O’Connor’a saloon, and the fight is now on The town claims that the atrip has been used for >i public highway for years, and no one else has any interest in it. At their special meeting Monday night the town board instructed the marshal to serve notice on Mr. Bingman to move the building within ten days. Of course Tom don’t intend it shall be done, and the xext move will be watohod with a great deal of interest by every citizen of the town.— Both the town nnd Mr. Harris have consulted able counsel as to their respective rights, and sh a matter of course the “able counsel's” opinions are diametrically opposed to each other. In the meantime Tom has possession, snd the lawyers will probably get a good foe out of the case before a settlement is reached.
