The origin of “windfall,” in the nenee of “good luck," dates from the time of William the Conqueror. It was then a criminal offense to out timber in the forests. Only such could be gathered as the wind had blown down; honoe a heavy wind-storm was hailed by the peasants as so much good luck; and hence the modern application of the expression.
