Sherman’s Resignation Asked.

I heard a rather good story on General Sherman the other day. Ic occurred away back in 1816, while he was on the Pacific coast, with the title of Captain. For some reason or other his men took a violent dislike to him, and after standing it as long as they thought they could they prepared a petition requesting him to resign. The paper contained the signatures of ail but five of his company and was handed to him by a committee of three. When it was presented Captain Sherman glanced over it and said: “Has every man signed this?" '“All but five,” replied the spokesman. “All but five?” “Yes, sir,” “Then will you kindly convey my thanks to those five and say that I hav# decided to remain with them?”— LSv Francisco Chronicle.
