Oldest Settlements in the United States.

In 1565 the first permanent settlement in the United States was made at St. Augustine, Fla., by a party of Spaniards under Melendez. Between the years 1540 and 1583 Francisco Vasquez do Coronado, Captain Francisco de Coronado and Don Antonio de Espeio explored New Mexico and occupied temporarily various points in that region. In the latter year Don Antonio de Espejo took possession .of a native pueblo, or town, called Tueas or Toas, and named it La Ciudad de Santa r Fe, which was identical in site with the present capital of New Mexico. Between '.590 and 1595 forts, colonies and missions were established in Mexico by Juan do Ouate. In 1607 the first permanent English settlement was planted by the London oompany in Virginia at Jamestown, which was so called in honor of Janies I. In 1614 the Dutch planted an irffant settlement on Manhattan island, which they called New Amsterdam, and in 1615 a settlement was made at Albany by the same nation.
