'A Halt to Jingoism.
The sugar lobby has failed to enforce annexation of Hawaii upon the Senate. Representations made by naval officers had undue effect on the President, but a thorough investigation of the claims made by Minister Stevens caused Secretary Foster to disavow his hasty if not collusive action and to induce the Senate, according to the latest reports, to defer consideration of the question altogether at this session. The longer annexation can be postponed the more certain is the moral sense of the American people to overcome the conspirators who are ready to sacrifice every principle dear to the American people in order to get a sugar bounty before Congress shall repeal the law by which it is now to be had.—Chicago Herald.
