STUDIED GREEK WITH PRESIDENT ARTHUR.
Monticello Herald. Itev. Gilbert Small of the Idavilie Ob erver remarks in reference to the Herald’s item about Mr. Cvrus Townsley and Whitelaw Reid:
Well, Cy is just as loyal an American citizen as Whitelaw only more retired in his way and wos k. By the way,| the Observer editor went to college with President Arthur, whose father preached within six miles of his boyhood home, and he sat in the class room beside Fred Seward, who was assistant Secretary of State under Lincoln. We may add what Bro. Jmall’s modesty prevented him from adding, viz: that he himself ranked wite the best of these men in scholarship and other collegiate attainments in his college days, as shown by the fact that he is a member of the Phi Beta Kapm Society - a distinction enjoyed by no other lesidert of White county, we be* lieve.
