Valuable Voice, There are heights to be reached In every profession, and it is not to be wondered at if those of his own profession are considered superior to those of any other by the enthusiastic artist. Martin, the popular i rench singer, so; nd food for reflection in an experience which he had with a cab-driver. The Incident is report by the author of “3ouvenirs d’un l.anteur. ” <ri id had a voice of great compass ■ most agreeable sounl, of which he • decidedly proud. He had a weak*b or drawing out compliments oc it. cine day, as he was being driven no igh the streets of Paris in a cab, he <o e one passing carelessly in front . t io cab, and in danger of being run ver. “ > boa!” he cried in his most sonorous •ies. The coachman turned around .diedly. *O, monsieur! * he cried, “what a o aut.ful ‘whoa!’ Ah, if I only had a voice like that!" " ell, what would you do if you had?” tsked Martin, with a smile, believing 'aa he had been recognized, and i leased the idea that his reputation extended nvnn to the drivers in the streets. “V h t would I do, monsieur? Faith, eh uld become the first coachman in arts!"
Hotwe*ri«ujinf Wore Him Out. The man of the house took to the sofa n the sitting-room, with a newspaper, urectly after breakfast, while his wife went on with the house-cleaning. She was dismantling the front room, and while he pursued the sporting column she t arried past him, in turp, seven chairs, three tables, a desk, four foottools, all of the piotures, a piano stool, a i ookcase and the rest of the furniture. Then she lugged in a pair of steps and a big pail of water and began to dean. “Maria, do you want any 8881814000?" said the man just then, rising and folding his newspaper. “Not just yet, dear," said Marla. “Weil, then, I think I'll leave you,” 3aid he, and he started for the office. On the way down he told three men that if there was anything that wore aim to the skin and bone it was that onfounded house-cleaning. How Rosewood Received Its Name. Many people suppose that rosewood takes its name from its color, but this Is a mistake. Rosewood is not red, nor yellow, but almost black. Its name comes from the fact that when first out It exhales a perfume similar to that of a "ose, and although the dried rosewood f commerce retains no trace of this early perfume, the name lingers as a relic of the early history of the wood. They Most Drink. Rats can be driven out of any house by depriving them of water. They can ive almost indefinitely without food, and when hard pushed will not hesitate to eat each other, but no rat can eo twenty-four hours without drink, and if every possible means of obtaining water is taken from them they will desert the vieinity. These Are Fine Threads. If your nerves were steady enough to admit handling the silkworm’s threads, and you were to take a carpenter’s rule and lay such threads side by side until they covered the space of an inch, you would find, after you had completed the task, that you had handled exactly 1,009 threads.

SHORT AND SERIOUS. Pbople devote too muoh time looking at the clook. A man’s temper is like a fly: it is full grown the moment It appears. The more you admire a thing, the more trouble it will make you. It is not the pleasure seeker wko finds pleasure, but the one who tolls for It The best revenge to take on your enemy is to try to amount to something yourself. Some men will make fools of themselves when tTbey know it as well as anybody. A man never wants anything so bad as when he is told he will have to fight for it to get it Too many people think their friends will admire them whether they have on clean collars or cot. To-mobrow should never eome: all that it does is to prove to a man that he was a fool yesterday. Thebe is comfort in the reflection that some men are honest as naturally as others are dead beats. No han can be everything his neighbor thinks he ought to be, unless he is ashamed of himself all the time. Thouoh there are billions of people in the world, every man’s happiness depends on how two or three treat him. No woman ever admirers a man so much after he has made a confidante of her, and told her of his love for another woman. A.FTEB a man has become rich in a town, people who dislike him begin to loos mysterious when the question is asked how he made his money. We once knew a pious woman who was always confessing to the Lord that she was a great sinner, but she was never known to admit a mistake of any kind to any cne else.—Atchison Globe.

V golden thread of gospel grace runs through the whole web of the Old Testament.—Henry. Doing is the great thing; for if, resolutely, people do what is right, in time they come to like doing it.—Ruskin.
