GERMAN MILK GARDENS.
rhe Delightful Places In Which Young Children Receive Attention. It was in Frankfort-on-the-Main that we first heard of “milk gardens,” writes a correspondent from Germany. We were visiting the famous Palm Garden, and, approaching a hedge that seemed to form Its farther limit, we heard the voloes and laughter of numerous children. Peering through a barrier which we could not pass, we saw a field (it is too large to be called a court or yard) containing swings, hammocks, perambulators, tiny croquet grounds and many toys and games adapted to outdoor use. An army of children, ranging in age from a lew months to 10 to 12 years, was In possession of this field of delights. Scattered about among them were a number of strong, ruddy young women in the nurse’s oapand apron, who cared for individuals or groups, according to the age of the little ones. Here and there were baby tents, play-houses and pavilions. On one edge of the field were some dainty stalls, each inhabited by a fine, mild-eyed eow. Upon Inquiry I found that this was “the Milk Garden of Frankfort." The “Milk Garden” of this aristocratic old city is the most democratic of plaoes. Here the rioh people who wish to be relieved for a time of the presence of their children send them accompanied by their own nurses; and here poor people, who can neither afford to devote their own time to their children nor hire separate nurses for them, miy bring their little ones, certain that from the garden nurses they will receive all the care and attention necessary to safety, health and amusement. Private nurses of the rich people and public nurses of the working people are subject to a supervision sufficient to protect the children of all classes from cruelty and neglect. The only food furnished in the garden is milk, whose freshness ana purity are assured, inasmuch as It is v drunk warm as it is drawn from .the udders of healthy, clean, well-kept cows. Children may be left in care of the garden for the entire day, or for any portion of it, as the parents desire. The fees are very moderate, and so classified that they are lightest for the poor. The garden is so administered that it is a selfsupporting business enterprise. It is not a summer luxury, but, modified to suit the needs of different seasons, it is maintained throughout the year.
Marriage Is a Failure
When a wife thinks more of her relatives than of her husband. When she believes that her husband must love her whether she deserves it or not. When she stoops to her husband’s level and tries to equal him In being mean. When she fails to realize that patienoe and gentleness are more natural to her than to a man. When a wife marries for convenience, and pretends that she marries tor love. When a wife pays too much attention to her husband’s old vows and not enough to the nature of the man she married. When a wife insists that her husband shall be as good as his mother and not as his father. When a wife always sees something about other men to admire, and nothing about her husband to appreciate. When a man is patient and cringing with men and impatient with his sick children. When a man expects that a wife can buy as much tor $1 as he can with $2. When a man frets because his wife did not love him before she knew him, or when a man expects a better horn# than he provides. When a husband smacks his lips in recollection of his mother’s cooking, forgetting that his appetite was better as a boy than as a man. When a woman imagines that all the women are in love with her “plug” of a husband. * When a wife expects the fact that she is a motner to compensate for all her failures. When a man says he cannot control temper with his wife and children, ..althongh they know he controls It In ,the presence of a large muscular enemy. a man is a liar, and his wife When a man 4* liberal and fair with everyone except his wife.
