Where Republicanism is a Tax.
The levy of six and one-half cents to pay off the state debt amounts to (8 ,871.79 in Johnson county. To relieve the people of this burden the tax law was devised to so equalize assessments; aa to make corporations pay their just proportion of revenue. Accordingly, railroads alone in'this county are taxed. $6,818.74 more than last year. This, together with the increase on telegraph property, and the revenue derived from property heretofore withheld from taxation, is about equal to the increased state tax, and one offsets tb* other as was intended by the general assembly. But the Republican officiate to the two townships and three corporations under their control have increased ths revenue $9,521.46 and. can give no reason for their action.
