On page 939 of the senate journal for 1891, all the Republican members, including Sbockney (republican candidate for lieutenant governor) and senator Gilman, who is now engaged in canvassing this county, are reoorded as voting for the tax bill. We take the ie ord i;. preference to the declarat on of the Republican, and again call upon senator Gilman to de. sand his vote on the measuie in question against the attacks of the sporadic genius who presides over the columns of hisforgan in this county. THE STATE DEBT A REPUBLICAN HERITAGE. With charming regularity the republican press and speakers charge that the Indiana Ltato debt is due solely to Democratic extravagance and mismanagement. In 1891 the State debt was $8,830,615.20. Of this debt the Democratic party is responsible for having contracted $3,752,809.22. This part of the debt has been made since 1883. It is an honest debt and represents something. It|has added to the material wealth of the State and no one need be ashamed of the items constituting it, and no Republican oan object to it. The debt was created for the follow-

Now let the republican press and orators show what their portion of the debt. Wfiat hrve the Republican party to show the people of the State for the immense amount of money they have squandered! 1 Not a public building was constructed during the Rep blican rule in Indiana, and no landmark of public pride has been left as an evidence of the debt contracted under Republican mis. rule, corruption and theft. From 1867 to 1869 this debt was fastened upon the people at six per cent, interest. No attempt wbb made to refund it a* a lower rare. The legislature of 1889 refunded this debt at three and one-half per cent, per annum, and returned to the school fund the money that had been purloined from i‘ by the Republicans over twenty years before and distributed that fund among the counties of the State to be used by the people at six per cent' interest 1 .
