HOIS. THOMAS HAMMOND, Democratio candidate for Congress, while a gentleman of some means secured mostly by wise investments in real estate, commenced his career in tha humble walks of life, and is the architect of his own fortune. He is now serving his third term as Ma,or of the city of liammond, elected on euch oocasion by incieased majorities. He has been a large employei of labor, and his friendly attitude toward employes was tersely expressed by Senator Kopelkn when pressing his olaims for the congressional nomination: “He never had a strike; Le never had a suit at law with an employe; he never foreclosed a mortgage.” He erected many tenement houses disposing of them to laboring msn on monthly payments at about what they would pay in rent, thus placing it within the reach of large numbers of families to secure homes of their own who, but for the opportunity he afforded them, would to-day be tenants. Ihos. Hammond is not an office-seeker. He a tended the Convention at Logansport as a delegate, but when he discovered the Lake oounty delegation determined to press him for the nomination he declined to take part in the proceedings Vote for Hammond. He has been a resident of Lake county for about sixteen years, land his entire property interests are within the|limits of Lake and Porter counties. This fact refutes the absurd lie published in the Rensselaer Republican a few weeks sin' e to the effect that his largest interests we e in Michigan, and that he was virtually h citizen of that State.
