SECRETARY OF STATE.
WiUiom R. Myers, candidate for secretary of state, was born in Clinton county, 0., June 12, 1836; removed to Modison eounty, Ind., 1848;his childhood and youth were paaod upon a farm, received a com-
mon school education; in 1856 learned the trade of a painter; followed this avocation during the summer and taught school during the winter seasons until 1861; in 1858 was elected surveyor of Madison oounty and continued in that office until be enlisted in the Union army in 1881; â– erved throughout the war, rising to the cask of captain; after the close of the war again taught school; studied law, and was admitted to practice in 1871; in 1868 and 1869 was superintendent of the public schools of Anderson, Ind., and remained a member of the school board until elected to congress. Was elected a representative from Indiana to the Forty-sixth congress. In 1882 he was nominated for secretary of state by the Democratic convention. He was elected and re-elected in 1884. In 1888 he was nominated for lieutenant governor, but was defeated with the rest of the ticket. He was nominated for secretary of state by acclamation.
