South American Railroads.
Railroads did not begin in South America until 1864, but in the little more than quarter of a century that has since elapsed their growth has been extraordinarily rapid. Brazil has now 6,000 miles of railroad in operation, and several thousand more in course of construction or planned. Great rivers favorable to navigation traverse the best parts of the continent, so that the facilities for communication are even better than the railroads constructed would indicate. Never let a wild-looking man get the drop on you with a valise.
