Tho disease with which, the ex-Emperor was afflicted was diabetes It Is said that tho last conscious words of Dom Pedro were an expression of his dcop afl'oetton for Brazil and his rogret that he could not go back there to die. His death will probably put an ond forever to tho attempts to revive the Brazilian Empire. Dom l’edro was born In 18215, and was only 5 years o'd when, In 1831, his father, Dom Pedro L, abdicated in his favor and loft Brazil. The boy was thus left qulto alone in the world, and he felt himself still moro iso ated when, at 10 years of ago, he hea d of his father’s death in Fortugal. His education was begun by the venerable Bishop of Chrysopolls, and by tho famous Liberal leader, Andrada Syiva. who had been rocailod from exile, where ho was sent again by his ungrateful party. Dom l’edro, when 1 year old. lost his mother, Leopo'dine, anAustrlan archduchess, and a sister of Marie Louise, tho second wife of Napoleon I. The knowledge of many languages was but a small part of the scholarly acquirements of the dead monarch, who was as much of a savant as of an Emperor, and he had been elected, not on account of h's title but as a reward for his numerous scientific works, a member of the famous Institute of France and most of the European academies. The revolution in Brazil broko out on the 15th of November, 1889; two days later Bom Pedro was deposed, and forced to leave the country, siuce which time he has resided in Europe. Dom Pedro was tall, robust, and of splendid bearing; his hair and beard had grown white prematurely. His blue eyes had a deep look, and his face, frank and open, inspired a great sympathy at the first glance Ho spoke easily, and listened with polite interest.
