THE SILVER DOLLAR.

Free coinage of silver was in practice in this country from 1793 to 1873, and there was never a word uttered against the silver dollar until tee money power began to feel that it was greater and stronger than the government when it commenced to attack and did succeed in demonetizing it. If the government should again get into tee control of the people, and every mother’s son of these conspirators should be incontinently kicked out of power and all their representatives squelched, it would no longer rear its crest of effronterv to try to manipulate everything to make the rich man richer and the poor man poorer.—Ex. Gen. Rosecians, the register of the treasury is vigorous at 71 years. He breakfasts every morning at 7, reaches his desk by 9 and remains there hard at work till 4. The bulk of his salary goes to old soldiers and other needy claimants on his oharit . She—l’ll never marry a man whose fortune hasn’t at least live ciphers in it. He (unwittingly)—Oh, darling, mine’s all ciphers. Hicks—How surprised Lot must have I been when he found his wife was salt.— Henpeck—No more than I was when I found that mine was pepper. Telegram: The inquest on the dead “rioters” near Soottdale, Pa., shows that the men were only noisy and disorderly, and had committed no act justifying the Pinkerton assassins in shooting them down indiscriminately as they did. The pleasing work of evicting women and children is going bravely on, women taking their little ones to jail. This in Pennsylvania. A physician registered at the county clerk’s office at Wichita, Kas., the other day who spelled medical “medicle. ” If people made the effort to keep old friends teat they do to make new ones there would be more comfort in the world. The farmers in the westetn part of Michigan are being swindled by a sliok canvasser who is introducing a thistle exterminator at $3,50 a bottle. A colored preacher quoted a well-know . passage in Shakespeare thus: “As we travel along the road from whence the traveler’s bones never return.” Mary Jane Cheney Tulia Ann Adelia Francis Fedora Eliza Maria Quit Tude Dant Morrison is the abbreviated appellation of one of the colored belles of Atlanta. Government Inspector in the Prison— And whst brought you here my man? “A cold, your honor. The stiletto hair-pin has found a vict m in Scotland. A lurch in her carriage drove the badly-adjusted pin into the head of a woman in Edinburgh lately, with fatal effect. The largest grapevine in the world is that growing at Uys, Portugal, which has been bearing since 1802. Now if the farmers could only induce the administration to open up negotiations with the great powers of Europe for an exchange of products how happy we should be.—Frankfort Crescent. —■ What Alcohol Can Do. —lt may seem strange, but it is nevertheless tme, that alcohol regularly applied to the thrifty farmer’s stomach will remove the boards from t.he fence, let the cattle into his crops, kill his fruit- trees, mortgage his farm and sow his fields with wild oats and thistles. It will take the paint off his buildings, break the glass out of them and fill them with rags. It will take the gloss f*om his clothes and polish from his manner, subdue his reason, arouse his passions, bring sorrow and disgrace upon nis family and topple him into a drunkard’s grave.—Brownsbnrg Record.

“Old Democrat”! in the Republican, admits that “tee County Commissioners and township Trustees can deorease the county and township taxes in proportion to the increase of appraisement.” And we have said: with duty performed, the decrease in that class of taxation will more than offset the increase for the State. He then says: “We all agree there is nothing wrong In appraising real and personal property at a true cash value.” All right, then, let us shake. — Your effort to throw a firebrand into the democratic camp by assuming to be an “Old Democrat”, has proved a failure and we can entertain no harsh feelings toward you after making such admissions. Secure the indorsement of them by your organ, the Republican, and the good deed will atone for your readiness to proceed on the mission which proved unsuccessful. An “Old Democrat” will always command our highest regard, but a pretender is a legitimate subject for ridicule. “Alliance” is busily engaged on his farm and we have not seen him for some weeks. He is iully capable of taking care of himself, and will no doubt respond to the strictures called forth by his communication.
