Rev. I. L Gorby assisted in the installation service of the Presbyterian church at Goodland. Tuesday. Geo. K. Hollingsworth has bought the Kannal homestead west side of the river. Mrs. Judge Hammond is attending a meeting of the Indiana World’s Fair Commissioners at Indianapolis. Mother Chilcote fell one day last week dislocating a bone of the right forearm and cutting her face. Drs. Loughridge have the case in charge. Newton W rren, Ida Chilcote, Emma Eger, Alice Irwin, Linnie Kelley, Guss Phillips, Alfred Hopkins and Lewis Hamilton constitute the graduating class of the Rensselaer High School this year.— Newt. Warren has highest grade, and Ida Chiloote next. Our neghbor is concerned about the cost of the Australian system. Thepeoile much prefer it over the old, however, t is now the law m about one-half the States, and will soon le adopted by the others. Rev. B. F. Ferguson expects to travel in the interest of the Deering Harvester Company. Nels. Randle, of Barkley township, has purchased a number of handsome lots on east side of Weston st,. north of Susan Jas. N. Leatherman, his son-in-law, will ereot a residence this year, and next Nels will put up a suitable habitation, become a retired granger and enjoy the fruits of past years of successful toil. The supply of milk at the creamery is increasing daily and has reached huge proportions. Tuesday last the quantity received reached nearly 17,000 pounds. We are pleased to note that Geo. Hollister is abls to be about again on crutches. The subscriptions for the building cf the new Baptist church has reached a point that will probably justify procedure with the enterprise. Miss Mary Washburn is assisting Mrs. H. L. Brown, in Cincinnati. Township assessor Porter informs us that he will Complete his labors m a few days. He has personally made the asessments of the township north of Renssel aer, while to Capt. Wasson he assigned that lying south of the town. He says there has been no kioking. All that has been asked was a fair deal and no favoritism. He is inclined to believe that his report will prove satisfactory. Quite an amount in mortgage notes has been added to the tax-list, some voluntarily and others not. These will add to the total valuation and decrease the levy.
The Republican explains that “the duty on wire-mails is preteotive, that en sugar, a revenue. That is the difference.”— The explanation is about as cl ar as mud. The bounty of 2 cents a pound, paid out of the taxos of the people to satisfy the the demands of the southern producers, if also given to the wire-nail monopolists, together with the removal of tariff tax on that produet, would result the same. According to the Republican the price of sugar is 2 cents less than under the old law—that 2 cents per pound the government pays out of taxes wrung from the consumer oa some other necessity. For this redaction in the price of 2 cents per pound the government pays out 2 centq fr m the people’s treasury. This would seem to bring the price paid by the people to the old notch. TSm repeal of the special taxes on dealers in leaf tobaeoo, and in manufactured tobaeoo, en manufacturers of cigars and on peddlers of tobacco, went into effect SI. This will deprive the treasury of 0,000 ayear, bat willinot cheapen the as one farthing to the consumer.— •Grant lathe McKinley hill! «, v. ■ : •• ■ X \
