The Oregon legislators has adopted the Australian election law. This will plaoe Oregon in the list of Democratic States, as a result of honest elections. The Illinois legislature is wrestling with the Australian ballot law. It will be approved by the Democratic House> but it is feared will be defeated by the Bepublican Senate. Honest elections are not in favor with Republican bosses* Every now and then we hear som e squeaky republican orgnn cackling over an imaginary redaction in the price of some staple pro u",ion and laying it all to the virtue of the McKinley bill.— Speaking of the reduction ix the price of sugar tbe Indianapolis News (republican) thia to say: “We can not see why there should be advance notes of ioy uttered now and then, as there are by the MoKinley orohibitionists, oyer tue cheap sugar which the free sugar clause of the McKinley law is to give us. All the recommendation there is in that comes from the quality of free trade, not protection. The McKinley law, on the contrary, is to put up the price in order that “onr workinemen may be employed at better wages, yes, sir.” Only from the raw grades of sugar has the tariff duty been removed, and this in the interest of sugar trusts that will buy it up for refining purpose*; and to accomplish this millons of dollars, taken from the taxes of the people, is paid to the trusts as a bounty. The trusts are to be supplied with free raw material and paid a bounty besides in hopes that they will supply the people as cheaply as the taxed foreign production. The people will pay the prioes fixed by the combines, in spite of the free raw grades furnished the trusts and the bounty paid them For this the Rensselaer Republican says the McKinley bill should be praised!
