TO REDUCE OBESITY.

NEW GYMNASIUM DEVICES TO MAKE GRACEFUL FORMS. Til© Dumb-Bell Is Superseded—Judicious. Lle of tlie Muscles Gives Strength ■ n,l SOmmetry to the Waist. The gypmasium has undergone a. great change within the last few years, especially in this country. The old style of training and developing themuscles by the. free use &t clubs, dumb-bells and horizontal bars haa been almost replaoed by a number of

new appliances. This is particularly true of the exercises taken for the purpose of reducing .fat and improving the beauty and symmetry of the human form. Clubs and dumb-bells only affect certain muscles without interfering with the rest of the body, and, while they reduce weight, they do not always lessen the width of the waist. The reason of this is that the abdominal muscles which are clogged with fat in the case 1 of an enlargement of jthqt part of the body are not exerted in club or dumb-bell exercise, or even in walking or riding. Witbin the last few years machines have been invented for the express pur - pose of supplying these deficiencies. Cuts of some of them are given here-

with. A feature commoif to many of them is an iron standard which is set against the wall with weights, which rin up or down, according as the ropes, set on pulleys, are pulled. One is so adjusted that the man pulls with his head while he leans for support on two horizontal bars. This not alone works the muscles on the neck and shoulders but the abdominal ones as well. The second one has a curved board fixed to support the back while the man leans backward and, with his arms thrown np and somewhat in of his head, pulls at the ropes. This is considered the best machine, and should be used sparingly at first. It will effectually remove all tendency to obesity from the abdomen. - The third cut represents a machine for keeping the muscles of the legs in

good condition for walking or running. It may be fastened to any.strong chair,, the weights*bevig placed underneath. The pedals Would serve as a footstool in an office chair, amjf'the weights can be lessened or .decreed at will. A few minutes’ exercise on this apparatus will have the same effect as a long and vigorous walk, and if continued steadily from day tjo day will keep the legs in perfect training. Some of the newmachines are designed for training its special athletic sports, such as rowingand base-ball. Batting requires great muscular power, and tlfere is a machinefor developing the muscles most used in hitting the ball.
