GOVERNOR WINANS.
Skotih of Michigan's New Chief Magistrate. Hon. Edwin B. Winans, Governorelect of Michigan, was born at Avon, New York, May 16, 1826, and removed with hie parents to Michigan in 1834. Ho* ‘received his education in district schools and at Albion College. In the spring of 1850 he made the overland trip to California, where he engaged In gold mining
until 1858, when ho returned and settled on the farm where he now lives. He has served two terms in the State Legislature, from 1831 to 1865, and one term as Judge of Probate of Livingston County. He is a member of the Episcopal Church. He was elected Representative in the Forty-eighth Congress in 1883 on the Fub’on ticket, by a vote of 18,516, to 18,484 votes for his Republican opponent, Oliver L. Spaulding, and 148 for the Prohibition ticket. Tn 1884 he was re-elected by a vote of 19,857 to for James C. Willson, Republican, and 3,445 for Leander C. Smith, Prohibitionist. Mr. Winans was nominated on the Democratic ticket and at the election of Nov. 6 was chosen Governor over James M. Turner, the Republican nominee. ,
