The protectionists continually ding it in our ears that the manufactures of the East must be protected or they will not prosperous. Let the farmer ask himself: “Why should I make the Ecstern manufacturer so prosperous that he is thereby enabled to hold a mortgage on my farm and exact more than I make in interest, finally taking the farm for the principal?” Why should prosperity be so unequal? and why should the manufacturer grow rich while the farmer, who sustains him, grows poor?— Democrat, Kingman, Kan.
