Birdie Dougherty may be only a miss of four summers, but in repartee she does not propose to let even the principal of our school get the best of her. The Blessing of Strong Nerves
Is recoverable, not by the use of mineral sedatives, but by a recourse to effectual tonic treatment. Opiates and the like should only be used as auxiliaries, and then as sparingly as possible. Vigorous nerves are quiet ones, and the most direct wav to render them bo is to reenforce the vital energies. That sterling invigorant, Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters, will be found all-sufficient for this purpose, since it entirely removes impediments to thorougn digestion and assimilation of the food, so that the body Is insured its due amount of nourishment, and consequently of stamina. Rheumatic tendencies and affections of the kidneys and bladder are also counteracted by the Bitters, which is besides a pleasant medicinal stimulant, infinitely purer than th 3 raw excitants of commerce, which react Injuriously upon the nervous system.

Nobody Died for Her.
Some years ago a sober, .zealous Connecticut parson went to visit a family in his neighborhood who were not so well versed in the rudiments of divinity as they might have been. When he arrived at their home he thought it proper to catechise them a little and with Mary, their eldest daughter, a girl about eighteen, buxom and blooming as a May morning, and whose charms had smitten the village swains with an epidemic. “Well, Mary.” said tbe parson, “I shall begin with you; come, tell me who died for you. ” Mary, with a flush on her cheeks, replied: “Why, nobody, as I knows on.” The parson, rather surprised at her answer, repeated his question with increased zeal. “Mary, I say, tell me who died for yon?” Poor Mary, rather irritated at the inquisitive parson, again replied, “Why, nobody, sir; there was Bob Dawson lay bed-rid for me about six months, but folks say he got about again.” —New York Mercury.
Curious Loss in the Mail.
At Christmas time some person, in another city inclosed a gold ring in a letter as a gift to a friend in this city. When the letter was delivered the ring was found to be missing, and a clean-cut circular hole through the envelope showed how it had escaped. A search was insti'uted, and it was found that the letter containing the ring had been place 1 in the package beside a packet containing quite a large sum of money in greenbacks. The weight of mail matter upon the bag containing these letters had forced the ring through the envelope in which it was contained and nearly through the package of greenbacks, in which it was found embedded. When the money packet was opened the ring dropped out, together with a large number of circular fragments of greenbacks of the exact 6ize of the ring, which had been cut out as neatly as with a die. —boston Advertiser. ~ An elephant at Philadelphia.died suddenly the other day from enlargement of the heart.
