Deafness Can't Be Cured
By local applications, as they can not reach the diseased portion of the ear" There Is only one way to core deafness, and that is by constitutional lemethrs. Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of Che mucus lining' of the Eustachian Tube. When this tube gets inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed Deafness is the resalt, and unless the inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever; nine cases out of ten are caused by catarrh, which is nothing but an. nflamed condition of the mucus surfaces. * We will give One Hundred Dollars for any case of Deafness (caused by catarrh) that we can not care by taking Hall’s Catarrh Cure. Famous Maine Lawyer's Report.
Thomas A. Deblois of Portland was one of the witty Maine lawyers of whom interesting.stories are told. At one time Judge Nicholas Emory, who was particularly sensitive to jokes at his own expenser had repeatedly rebuked Deblois* for aliened departure from the rules of propriety. He being specially .pointed at one time, the counselor retorted: “I beg your honor’s pardon. Your honor is right and I was wrong, as your honor usually is.” —Lewiston Journal,
A Woman in the Case.
There always is. She is the power behind the throne. A woman’s influence over the man who loves her is often absolute. To wield so groat a power to guide, strengthen, and help her husband, a woman’s mind should be clear and healthy. It cannot be if she is suffering from any functional derangement. How many a home is made unhappy because she who should be its life and light is a wretched, depressed, morbid invalid! Wives, mothers, and daughters, why suffer from “female complaints” which are sapping your lives away, when Dr. Pierce’s Favorite Prescription will renew your health and gladden those about you? It has restored happiness to many a saddened life. Why endure martyrdom when release is so easy? In its special field there never was :i restorative like the “Favorite Prescription.” To cleanse the stomach, liver, and system generally, use Dr. Pierce’s Pellets. 25 cents. A curious Btory comes from St. Petersburg. A well-Aown Polish pr.ncess recently took a house in the Russian capital, vTo her disgust she found it haunted. A religious service was held and the demons exorcised. But after a few days they returned with re-enforce-ments. The result is that in order to live in the house at all the princess has to hold an exorcist religious service every three days, Th sis said to be actually going on in the capital of the Russian Empire. - Eight varieties of leprosy are recognized in China, and the disease is regarded as contagious, infectious and hereditary, but is said to disappear in four generations.

Herr Bismarck's Boots.
Prince Bismarck taught a Berlin shoemaker, who was proverbial for making promises which he did not keep, ho w to be punctual. The man after man v promises, had failed to keep them. When this again occurred, the shoemaker was aroused at 6 o’clock the next morning by a messenger with the simple question: “Are Herr Bismarck’s boots ready yet?” When the shoemaker said “No,” he retired; bnt in ten minutes another messenger arrived. Load rang the bell. “Are Herr Bismarck’s boots ready yet?” was the inquiry. “No," was the reply. And so it went on every ten minutes until the boots were rerdy iu the evening. The shoemaker war more cautious iu making promises after that.

You are nervous and dyspeptic, your appetite flags, your slumber is broken cr disturbed by uneasy dreams, or you court the sleepy god In vain. What shall you do ? Try an alcoholic excitant to stimulate appetite, deaden the nerves at bed-time with a narcotic? Neither of these. Try Hostotter’s Stomach Bitters. It will, believe us, be more than a trial. You will continue to use this justly renowned nerve invigorant and stomachic. It is In the exigency supposed just what is wanted. It is a healthful stimulus t j appetite and digestion, does not excite, but quiets the brain and nerves,-is an excellent diuretic and a speedy reformer of a disordered condition of the liver and bowels. It counteracts a tendency to vheunpatisnl, nullifies the prostrating effects of overwork, mitigaftos the infirmities of age, and hastens convalescence. Persons exposed to rough weather should use It as a preventive, as should also tired studenes and business men.
A statue commemorat ng a touching little episode in the life of the late German Emperor Frederick is about to be erected at Kaiserslautern When Frederick was Crown Prince he visited one of the orphan Hsylums of that town. Among the children was a sickly and sad-faced little boy. Frederick noticed him, took him in his arm 3, and thereupon agreed to become his godfather. The child, to whom a caress was a stranger, appeared somewhat frightened at first, but soon got over his difficulty and began to play with thg Prince’s medals and decorations. The statue in question will represent the Prince with a baby in his arms and the youngster tugging at his cordons and crosses.

How gieat a difference the state of our own affairs makes in the way we regard the things that happen in the world! A city man, visiting one summer in the country, was out walking on a dry, hot day. As he passed along the road, he stopped beside a field where a farmer of his acquaintance was busy haying. “Good a|ternoon, Mr. Street,” said the farmer, as the city m n stopped to remove hifpnat and wipe the moisture from his forehead; “pootyhot, aint it.” “Hot! I should think it was. We need a good rain to cool off this parched air.” The farmer dropped his hands in horror. “Rain!” he exclaimed, “rain right here in hayin’ time! Why, what kind of a man be you, Mr. Street? It’s pooty nigh a crime even to think o’ rain ’t such a time as this. ’T’ould ruin the kentry, I tell ye!” The city man felt decidedly rebuked, and went on his way. Two or three days afterward he met the same farmer on the principal street of the shire town, dressed up in his best clothes and engaged in his turn in wiping, with his big red bandana. the drops from his forehead. “My hemlock!” said the farmer, “awful hot, aint it? If we had a few drops o’ rain—big drops, you know—’t might help to keep us fiom bein’ cooked alive.” “Rain!” said the city man; “why, what are you thinking about? You wouldn’t want it to rain right in haying time, would you?” “Oh,” said the farmer, “the case is different now. I’ve got my hay all ini”

Imagine the luxury of such a tree, and the delights of going out to your needle-and-thread orchard and picking a needle threaded and all ready for business. Odd as it may seem to us, there is on the Mexican plains just such a forest growth. The tree partakes of the nature of a gigantic asparagus, and has large, thick, fleshy leaves, reminding one of the cactus, the one populHr'v known as the “prickly pear." The needles” of the needle-and-thread-lr e are set along the edges of these thick leaves. In order to get one equipped for sewing, it is only necessary to pusn the thorn or “needle” gently backw. rd into its fleshy sheath, this to loosen it from the tough outside covering of the leaf, and then pull it from the socket. A hundred fine fibers adhere to the thorn-like spider webs. By twisting the "needle” daring the drawing operation this fiber can be drawn out to an almost iudefinite length. The action of the atmosphere toughens these minute threads amazingly, to such a degree as to make a thread twisted from it not larger than common No. 40 capable of sustaining a weight of five ponnds, about three times the tensile strength of common “six-cord” thread. The scientific name of th s forest wonder is tensyana mucadina.— St. Louis Republic.

The Ladies Delighted.
The pleasant effect and the perfect safety with which ladies may use the liquid Irnit laxative, Syiupof Figs, under all conditions make it their favorite remedy. It is pleasing to the eye and to the taste, gentle, yet effectual in acting on the kidneys, liver and bowels. The Kansas City Medical Index states that the Pension Board of that city does not contain any of the r?galar and representative medical men. bat has been selected from an “irresponsible horde” of “uneducated cjuacks,” whose merit lies it is presumed, in their political influence. The Kansas City physicians should take some interest in promoting civil-service reform if affairs are as the local journal indicates.
