The “Russian Influenza” has reached New York City. Dr. Edson, of New York, says all that is necessary to erne it is a ten per cent, solution of quinine sprayed over the affected membrane freely and frequently, and the following taken internally: 1 liree grains oi quinine, one half grain of camphor, and a quarter of a grain of extract of belladonne, to be made into pills pow ders, and taken four or five times a day. Sneeze. In 1889, the present year, according to the statistics of labor for Ohio, the amount of farm mortgagers in ilie states named below, was as follows: Ohio $701,000,000 Indiana 398,000,000 Illinois 620,000,000 Wisconsin 250,000,000 Michigan 850,000,000 Minnesota 175,000,000 lowa’ 351,000,000 Nebraska 140,000,000 Kansas 203,000,000 Missouri 237,000,000
Total $3,425,000,000 By the census of 1880 the total value of all the farms in these states was reported $5,107,' >40,003. | Here are personal mortgages covering more than tliree-fifths the value of the farms in these, the most productive states in the Union not counting the state, municipal and railroad indebtedness, which would doubtless equal the othor two-fifths, the interest on which is finally charged up to the farmers. In the|face of the above fig ures we are told tnat farming is a fairly prosperous business and that a system of taxation which causes the farmer to pay trust prices for everything re buys is just the thing for ' lira, and poor deluded farmers, manv of them, vote right along to increase their indebtedness.
Joseph M. Wade, editor and general manager of fiber and fabric, a publication devoted to the interests of the cotton and woolen trades, m a letter just published, says: As a born naturalist and a student of natural law and natural rights, 1 am satisfied that the duty on raw material should be removed, with perhaps some rare exceptions. It would then bring, not only our carpet manufacturers, but all other textile manufac turers, down to a hard-pan basis with their foreign com petitors, and if we still retained a sufficient protection on manufactured goods, we sho’d be able to compete favorably in the markets of the world, while keeping our own. This conclusion is natural one, and not drawn from statistics or commercial reports. lam sat isfied that the life of the republican party depends on their action in this matter of raw material. It is no longer a question of political deals, but has become one of the wrongs which a great people must throw off; and we have advanced so far in education that even our laborers see conclusively that we are saddled with this unnatural and unrighteous tax on raw materials, which only prohibits us from buying where we can buy cheapest. 1 am not prepared to apply this principal to m oiufactured goods, but the day has come when it should be applied to raw material, and the day will come when we can apply it to manufactured goods as well. Let us guard well our industries and make n o m i stakes. -5J r. Wade is, and always has
been a republican, but he is not a politician. The views he expresses so ably and clearly are shared by thousands and ten thousands of intelligent republicans, who will net continue much longer to vote with that party if it persists in its present war upon American industries.
