About a Big Gun.
Olivet Cromwell, on returning from the field of the first battle of Worcester, had occasion to pass thrpugh that city; and stopped for a few moments at the Bishop’s palace. The Bishop remarked that the bat* tie had been “waging very hotly over yonder.” To this Cromwell replied: “Oh! I suppose you heard the roar of the artillery ?” “No,” rejoined the Bishop; “I knew of it from the report of a Canon.” “My lord,” said Cromwell, “I should advise you to obtain the dismissal of that gentleman from his office.” “Oh! why?” “Because a cannon is of no use unless discharged.” “I prefer,” answered the Bishop, “to let my Canon off.” London Pick-Mo-Up. \
